Rivet Types, Sizes, and Removal Guide

The document outlines key information about rivets, including types (blind and solid shank), popular diameters (3/32, 1/8, 5/32), and specifications for shop head dimensions. It details head types, aluminum alloy markings, grip length calculations, edge distances, and rivet pitch guidelines. Additionally, it provides a procedure for removing solid shank rivets effectively.

Two major rivets:

Blind rivets
Solid shank rivets
3 popular diameter:
3/32
1/8
5/32

The diameter of the shop head should be 1.5x the diameter of the rivet. The height
should be .5x
Different Head types and its code:
Universal head set – 470
Round head - 430
Flat head - 441
Countersunk head – 426
Brazier head - 456
Common alluminum alloys and its markings:
The length of the rivet should be equal to the thickness of both objects you are
fastening, plus 1.5 times the diameter of the rivet
Grip Length=Total Material Thickness

Minimum Edge Distance=2×Rivet Diameter

= 2.5x for countersunk
Maximum Edge Distance=4×Rivet Diameter

Rivet pitch refers to the distance between the centers of adjacent rivets in
the same row
 The smallest allowable rivet pitch is 3 rivet diameters.
 The average rivet pitch usually ranges from 4 to 6 rivet diameters
 rivet pitch could be as large as 10 rivet diameters.
 One-and three-row layouts have a minimum pitch of 3 rivet diameters
 a two-row layout has a minimum pitch of 4 rivet diameters
REMOVING RIVETS
The best procedure to use when removing a solid shank rivet is to drill to the base
of the manufactured rivet head with a drill one size smaller than the rivet shank and
then remove the rivet with a punch.
