SCIENCE 9 PERFORMANCE TASK FOR 3RD QUARTER

1. "Climate Action" Advocacy Video


 The Task: Create a short video reflection advocating for a sustainable community practice,
such as rainwater collection or reducing fossil fuel dependence.
 Key Requirement: Must illustrate the link between human activities (like deforestation)
and global phenomena (like melting glaciers or flooding).

2. Creating a diorama for climate change is an excellent way to


visualize complex environmental shifts.

 The Split-World View: Divide a shoebox into two halves. On the left, show a healthy, lush
forest or stable arctic scene. On the right, show the "After" effects—dry, cracked earth,
wildfire remnants, or rising floodwaters with floating trash.

Here's how to elaborate on the key elements for each side of the "Split-World View" diorama:

Left Side: The "Before" Scene (Healthy & Stable)

 Lush Environment: Feature abundant green trees (use small sticks with green paper leaves,
moss, or toy trees), clear blue water, and a variety of small, healthy toy animals (e.g., deer, birds,
fish).

 Balance: Depict a stable ecosystem with healthy soil (real dirt or brown paper), a clean energy
source like a single wind turbine, or a simple, intact arctic habitat with firm, white ice and snow.

 Key Labels: Use small signs to label elements like "Biodiversity," "Clean Air," "Healthy
Ecosystem," and "Sustainable Practices."

Right Side: The "After" Scene (Damaged & Unstable)

 Degradation: Show dry, cracked earth (use painted, broken clay or crumpled, painted paper),
"wildfire remnants" (charred sticks and red/orange paper flames), or rising, polluted water (blue foil
with small pieces of plastic trash glued on top).

 Impact: Include displaced or sick-looking toy animals, a smoking factory chimney (a small tube
with grey cotton ball "smoke"), or a melting iceberg with a distressed polar bear on a tiny
remaining piece of ice.

 Key Labels: Use small signs to label elements like "Deforestation," "Pollution," "Habitat Loss,"
"Global Warming," and "Rising Sea Levels."
