Motivation Letter
Team Introduction
We are a team of motivated, multi-disciplined students from IIT Dhanbad and allied graduate
studies, joined together by our passion for petroleum engineering, reservoir studies, and
sustainable energy solutions. Members of our team include:
• Parth Shroff (2nd-year BTech student in Petroleum Engineering at IIT Dhanbad)- He has
strong interest in reservoir engineering, production optimization, and application of
data-driven methodologies in upstream workflows. He will be contributing in petroleum
related research work, coding and machine learning integration for improved reservoir
evaluation, performance forecasting, and decision-support analytics.
• Muqseet Ahmed (2nd-year BTech student in Petroleum Engineering at IIT Dhanbad)- He
has developing expertise in reservoir engineering concepts, reservoir performance
understanding, and well-planning fundamentals. He will be contributing in analytical support
to reservoir evaluation, subsurface decision-making.
• Sarthak Singh (MTech student in Petroleum Engineering) - He is bringing real-world
upstream industry exposure and applied petroleum operational knowledge. He will be
monitoring our approach and will be ensuring realistic, feasible, and industry-aligned
reservoir development strategies.
• Sneha Karmakar (MScTech student in Applied Geophysics) - She has strong subsurface
interpretation and geophysical data analysis capabilities. She will be validating our approach
in order to accurately integrate the seismic and geological insights into reservoir
characterization and modelling.
• Avirup Bose (PhD scholar in Applied Geology) - He will be offering advanced expertise in
geoscience, mineralogy, and rock-fluid interaction studies. He will be playing a pivotal role in
strengthening geological realism, reservoir heterogeneity understanding, and subsurface
behaviour evaluation of our proposed solution.
We are guided by Faculty Advisor Mohammed Hamid Siddique Sir, whose mentorship will
strengthen our technical approach and ensure academic as well as realistic rigor.
Collectively, we share strong academic backgrounds in petroleum/reservoir engineering
along with related disciplines and an interest in applying engineering, geoscience, data
analysis, and sustainability to real-world energy challenges.
Motivation to Participate
We are highly excited to participate in the EAGE-bp India Student Challenge as we view this
initiative as a remarkable platform to apply our academic knowledge to real-world subsurface
challenges. The opportunity to work on a realistic offshore UKCS dataset and contribute to
Recovery & Unlocking Value for a mature oil field is very rare and it directly aligns with our
career goals in upstream energy systems. The multi-phase structure of the challenge offers
a rigorous learning environment that mirrors professional E&P workflows, strengthening our
skills in reservoir evaluation, subsurface analysis, risk assessment, and strategic
decision-making. We are excited to channel our diverse academic strengths into a cohesive,
high-performance effort driven by innovation, curiosity, and a commitment to excellence to
deliver solutions that are technically sound, practical, and forward-looking.
Team Vision
Our vision is to utilize advanced subsurface interpretation and reservoir engineering
methodologies to maximize recovery and unlock remaining value from a mature offshore
field on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS). We aim to directly support the challenge
objectives, which include asset revitalization, assessment of infill drilling feasibility, and
development of a viable strategy to enhance economic oil recovery.
To achieve this, we will adopt a systematic and multidisciplinary workflow:
1. Subsurface Data Analysis
We will evaluate well logs, production behavior, and seismic interpretation to identify
bypassed hydrocarbon potential and characterize associated uncertainties.
2. Integrated Reservoir Modeling
We will integrate geological, geophysical, petrophysical, and engineering domains to
construct a realistic reservoir model that supports technically sound infill well
placement and scenario testing.
3. Scenario Development and Comparative Assessment
We will analyze multiple development strategies, including optimized drilling and
recovery enhancement options, and assess their technical feasibility, economic
viability, and risk exposure through performance forecasting and decision-based
ranking.
4. Technical Deliverables
We will prepare a clear, structured, and comprehensive set of deliverables including
a technical report, subsurface maps, recovery forecasts, risk evaluations, and a
professional presentation that communicates the rationale behind each development
scenario.
Through this approach, we intend to demonstrate how technology-driven analysis,
data-supported decisions, and responsible field management can extend the value of a
matured offshore asset while ensuring operational efficiency, economic effectiveness, and
environmental consideration.
Conclusion
As a multidisciplinary team of petroleum engineers, a geophysicist, and a geologist we are
well-aligned with the competition’s emphasis on integrated subsurface problem-solving. We
believe our diverse academic backgrounds and developing technical skills will enable us to
make a meaningful effort in preparing a reliable and thoughtfully evaluated development
plan.
We are keen to learn from this experience, benefit from expert feedback, and strengthen our
capabilities through each phase of the challenge. We sincerely thank the organizers for
considering our application and would be grateful for the opportunity to participate in the
EAGE-bp India Student Challenge with dedication and a strong willingness to improve.
