AIM
To demonstrate the
phenomenon of Electrostatic
shielding cage using metallic
utensil, aluminum foil, and a
Bluetooth device.
ABSTRACT
The project “Electrostatic Shielding Cage”
aims to show how a closed conductorcan
block electric fields and electromagnetic
waves. This principle is demonstrated
using a simple setup involving a mobile
phone, a Bluetooth music device, an iron
cage, and a metallic utensil. The
experiment verifies that electromagnetic
radiationcannot pass through a closed
conductor, similar to how a Faraday Cage
works.
INTRODUCTION
Electrostatic shielding is the phenomenon
by which a conductive enclosureprotects its
contents from external electric fields. The
concept is based on the factthat electric
charges on a conductor reside on its
surface and the electric fieldinside a
conductor is zero. This effect is widely used
in scientific and technologicalapplications
such as in cable shielding, microwave
ovens, and protecting sensitiveinstruments
from electromagnetic interference.
MATERIAL USED
1. Suitable sized utensil (metal bowl) so that radiation
from the phone cannot reachthe music device.
2. Music device (Bluetooth speaker) connected
with phone.
3. Iron cage-like material.
4. Base covered with aluminum foil.
CONSTRUCTION
Case 1: With Iron Cage
The phone is placed on an aluminum foil-covered base, and
the
Bluetooth-connected music device is kept nearby. When an
iron cage with smallholes is placed over the phone, the
Bluetooth signal continues to work as the holesallow
radiation to pass.
Case 2: With Metal Utensil
When the phone is covered completely by a metal utensil, the
Bluetoothconnection weakens or stops, showing that the metal
utensil blocks the [Link], it acts as an electrostatic shield.
In some cases, even an iron cage can provide partial
shielding depending onthe size of the gaps and the
frequency of the waves.
OBSERVATION
1. When covered with an iron cage,
Bluetooth connection continues to
function.
2. When covered with a metallic
utensil, Bluetooth connection stops.
3. The effectiveness of shielding
depends on the material and the size
of openingsin the shield.
LIMITATIONS & ADVANTAGES
Limitations:
1. Shielding is not perfect if the cage has large holes.
2. Only effective for certain types of electromagnetic
waves.
Advantages:
1. Protects sensitive electronic equipment from external fields.
[Link] signal interference.
3. Demonstrates basic electromagnetic principles easily.
APPLICATIONS
1. Used in laboratories to isolate
instruments from electric interference.
2. Used in cars and airplanes to
protect passengers from lightning.
3. Applied in microwave ovens to
contain radiation.
4. Used in high-voltage testing areas
for safety.
DAILY LIFE APPLICATIONS
1. Cable shielding in electronic
devices.
2. Elevator cabins acting as partial
Faraday cages.
3. Car bodies protecting passengers
during lightning strikes.
4. Mobile phone signal loss inside
metal buildings or lifts.
CONCLUSION
This experiment successfully
demonstrates the phenomenon
of electrostaticshielding. A
closed metallic surface blocks
electric fields and
electromagneticradiation from
passing through it. The project
helps us understand how
Faradaycages and shielding
devices work to protect
electronics and humans from
unwanted electromagnetic
effects.
