CHAPTER – 1
INTRODUCTION**
1.1 Introduction
Cleanliness and sanitation are essential components of a healthy and prosperous society. In India,
lack of proper sanitation has been a major challenge affecting public health, economic productivity,
and overall quality of life. To address this issue, the Government of India launched the Swachh
Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission) on 2nd October 2014, commemorating the birth anniversary
of Mahatma Gandhi.
Bihar, being one of the most populous and economically backward states of India, faced severe
sanitation challenges such as open defecation, poor waste management, and lack of awareness.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan played a significant role in improving sanitation infrastructure and socio-
economic conditions in Bihar.
1.2 Meaning of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a nationwide cleanliness campaign aimed at achieving a clean, hygienic,
and open-defecation-free India. The mission focuses on:

and its impact.
Government of India Reports (2016–2023) highlight significant improvement in toilet
coverage and reduction in open defecation.
World Health Organization (WHO) studies indicate improved public health due to sanitation
programs.
Kumar (2018) found that sanitation drives positively affect rural employment.
Singh and Verma (2020) emphasized behavioural change as a key success factor.
Economic Survey of India reports that improved sanitation leads to higher productivity and
reduced healthcare costs.
The literature reveals that Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has contributed positively to socio-economic
development, though challenges remain in sustainability.
