Probability and Statistics Assignments

The document outlines a digital assignment for a Probability and Statistics course, detailing various statistical calculations and analyses to be performed on provided datasets. Tasks include calculating Pearson's coefficient of skewness, quartiles, moments about the mean, skewness, kurtosis, coefficients of variation, and probabilities related to random variables. The assignment also involves working with joint density functions and marginal densities for different scenarios.

Frequency: 2 6 12 18 9 3
2. From the following data, compute quartiles and Bowley’s coefficient of skewness.
Income(Rs): Below 200 200-400 400-600 600-800 800-1000 Above 1000
No. of persons: 25 40 80 75 20 16
3. Calculate the first four moments about the mean and also values of 𝛽1and 𝛽2 from
the following data.
Marks: 0 -10 10-20 20-30 30-40 40-50 50-60 60-70
Students: 8 12 20 30 15 10 5
4(a).The first four moments of a distribution about the value 5 are 2,20,40 and 50. Find
skewness and kurtosis.
4(b). In a frequency distribution the coefficient of skewness based on quartiles is 0.6. If
the sum of the upper and the lower quartiles is 100 and the median is 38, find the value
of the upper quartiles.
5(a). From the following information calculate coefficient of variation and coefficient of
skewness.
Arithmetic mean = 56.8, Median =59.5 and Standard deviation = 12.4
5(b). For a moderately skewed data, the arithmetic mean is 200, the coefficient of
variation is 8 and Karl Pearson’s coefficient of skewness is 0.3. Calculate the mode and
median.
6. A dealer’s profit, in units of $5000, on a new automobile is a random variable X having
density function

(a) Find the mean of the dealer’s profit

(b)Find the variance of the dealer’s profit.
(c) What is the probability that the profit exceeds $500?
7. Suppose that the probabilities are 0.4, 0.3, 0.2, and 0.1, respectively, that 0, 1, 2, or 3
power failures will strike a certain subdivision in any given year.
(a)Find the mean and variance of the random variable X representing the number of power
failures striking this subdivision.
(b)Find the mean and variance of the random variable Z = 5X+3.
(c) Find P(X< 3) and P(X >1)
8. Two electronic components of a missile system work in harmony for the success of
the total system. Let X and Y denote the life in hours of the two components.
The joint density of X and Y is

(a) Give the marginal density functions for both random variables.
(b) What is the probability that the lives of both components will exceed 2 hours?
9. A convenience store has two separate locations where customers can be checked out as
they leave. These locations each have two cash registers and two employees who check
out customers. Let X be the number of cash registers being used at a particular time for
location 1 and Y the number being used at the same time for location 2. The joint
probability function is given by

(a) Give the marginal density of both X and Y as well as the probability distribution of X
given Y = 2.
(b) Give E(X) and Var(X).
(c) Give E(X | Y = 2) and Var(X | Y = 2).

certain airport is a random variable Y = 3X −2, where X has the density function

Find the mean and variance of the random variable Y.
