Chapter no : 04

Intel-80386DX

1
Module : 04

This module includes the following

• · Architecture of 80386 microprocessor

• · 80386 registers – General purpose Registers, EFLAGS and Control registers

• · Real mode, Protected mode, virtual 8086 mode

• · 80386 memory management in Protected Mode – Descriptors and selectors, descriptor

tables, the memory paging mechanism

2
Salient Features of 80386DX
• The 80386 is a 32-bit processor that supports, 8/16/32-bit
data operations

• 80386 – available version 80386DX & 80386SX

• The instruction set of 80386DX is upward compatible with all

its predecessors

• With 32-bit address bus the addressing capability reaches to

4 Gbytes

• 80386 supports 16k number of memory segments and hence

we can have 4Gbytes × 16k = 64 TBytes of memory.

10
80386: Register Organization
80386 has 32 internal Registers & are classified in seven categories

1. General purpose Register

2. Segment Registers

3. Instruction pointer & flag register

4. Control Registers

5. System address & segment registers

6. Debug Registers

7. Test registers

Modes of 80386

1. Real Address Mode

2. Protected virtual address mode (PVAM)
3. Virtual 8086 mode

20
80386: Real Address Mode
• After reset is given, 80386 starts execution from FFFFFFF0H under real
addressing mode.
• The segment size in real mode is 64 KBytes.
• In real Address, two memory areas are reserved one for system
initialization & other for interrupt interrupt pointer table
• The addressing techniques, memory size, interrupt handling in this mode of
80386 are similar to the real addressing mode on 80286.
• Memory addressing in real mode is given as:-

Note:
The primary
purpose of Real
addr mode is to
setup the 80386
processor for PVAM

23
80386: Protected Mode

80386 support two methods

a) Paging disabled a) Paging disabled b) Paging enabled

28
80386: Segmentation

29
80386: Segmentation
Segmentation is one method of memory management.
Segmentation provides the basis for protection.
All information about asegment is stored in an 8 byte data structure called a descriptor.
All of the descriptors in a system are contained in tables recognized by hardware.
