🌱 CHAPTER: DEVELOPMENT – COMPLETE POINTERS
1. Meaning of Development
Development means improvement in quality of life of people.
It includes material (income, wealth) and non-material (equal rights,
dignity, security) aspects.
Development goals vary for different people, depending on their needs
and situations.
2. Different People, Different Goals
People have conflicting goals (e.g., a dam: farmers want water,
displaced families lose homes).
Development is comprehensive, not only about income.
People also desire:
o Equality
o Freedom
o Security
o Respect
o Better working conditions
3. Income and Other Goals
Money is important because it fulfills basic needs.
But non-material goals are equally necessary:
o Pollution-free environment
o Peace
o Good working atmosphere
o No discrimination
Development must balance both economic and non-economic goals.
4. National Development
National development means overall improvement of a country.
It includes:
o Rise in income
o Better health and education
o Infrastructure
o Reduction of poverty and inequality
Different groups may prefer different models of development.
5. How to Compare Countries?
Comparison uses an indicator called Per Capita Income (PCI).
PCI = Total national income ÷ Population
Countries are classified by the World Bank:
o Low-income countries
o Middle-income countries
o High-income countries
6. Limitations of Per Capita Income
Averages do not show distribution of income (rich vs poor).
Does not consider:
o Health
o Education
o Pollution
o Security
Only income is not enough to measure development.
7. Human Development Index (HDI)
Introduced by UNDP (United Nations Development Programme).
A better measure of development because it includes:
1. Life expectancy (health)
2. Mean & expected years of schooling (education)
3. Per capita income (standard of living)
Countries are ranked on these indicators.
8. Public Facilities
Essential services provided by the government NOT based on personal
income.
Examples:
o Schools
o Hospitals
o Public transport
o Water and sanitation
o Electricity supply
Without public facilities even high income cannot ensure good quality of
life.
9. Sustainable Development
Development that meets the needs of the present without harming
future generations.
Importance:
o Natural resources are limited.
o Overuse causes environmental damage.
Examples of sustainable practices:
o Reforestation
o Reduced pollution
o Renewable energy
o Groundwater conservation
10. Resource Depletion
Example: Groundwater depletion
o Overuse leads to water shortages.
o Affects agriculture and daily life.
Responsible usage is necessary for sustainable development.
11. Important Terms
Happiness Index – Measures well-being.
Literacy Rate – Percentage of literate population.
Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) – Children dying before age 1 per 1000
births.
Net Attendance Ratio – % of children attending school.
Life Expectancy – Average years a person is expected to live.
