Sia is one of Australia’s most well-known singer-songwriters. She is

famous for her unique voice, emotional pop songs, and creative style. She
started her career as a jazz singer in Adelaide and over time, she
developed her own sound and became known worldwide for songs like
Chandelier and Cheap thrills. Even though she began performing in the
late 1990s, she didn’t rise to international fame until the 2010s, when her
emotional lyrics and strong vocals made her stand out in the pop industry.
Something interesting about Sia is that she often hides her face using
wigs or big costumes as she prefers to keep her privacy and wants people
to focus on her music rather than her appearance. Another fun fact is that
in 2019, she dressed up as a woman named Cici that went to a Walmart in
America and paid for everyone’s groceries. NEXT SLIDE

The song I chose to focus on is the greatest as It’s one of Sia’s most
inspiring songs. When you listen to this song, pay attention to two main
elements - duration and timbre. For duration, focus on the strong rhythm
and steady beat that’s created by the electronic drums and claps. For
timbre, listen to how Sia’s voice blends with the electronic instruments.
Her powerful and slightly raspy tone contrasts with the bright and smooth
background sounds. In this section, you can clearly hear the pulse of the
beat, the claps, and her emotional voice all coming together. (play video)

Starting with duration, the tempo of this song is quite fast and steady,
around 96 beats per minute, which gives it that strong and uplifting feel.
You can hear that the time signature stays in 4/4, and the drums and
claps clearly mark each beat, making it easy to feel the pulse. There’s also
a bit of syncopation, which means some of the claps hit slightly off the
main beat. You can also hear different rhythmic layers - the drums keep
the main beat, while Sia’s singing adds rhythm through her phrasing and
emphasis on certain words. The constant beat throughout the song
matches the meaning of the lyrics. For timbre, her voice in this section
sounds strong and emotional, with synths that sound bright and smooth,
filling in the background and giving it that modern, pop feel. The
electronic drums are sharp and metallic, adding energy to the song, and
there’s a strong contrast between her powerful vocals and the clean,
electronic instruments. All these sounds - the drums, the synths, and her
voice work together to create a powerful and inspiring atmosphere. NEXT
