Sedimentary Rock Classification Guide

Sedimentary rocks are classified into clastic, bioclastic, and chemical types. Clastic rocks are formed from fragments of other rocks through processes like lithification, which includes cementation and compaction, and are categorized by grain size using the Wentworth scale. Bioclastic rocks originate from shell fragments, while chemical rocks precipitate from solutions.

Classification of sedimentary rocks

Sedimentary- made up of fragments of other rocks (clastic) (recipe: breaks up rocks known as weathering and
transport known as erosion)
- Precipitate from a solution (chemical)

Clastic- formed from fragments of other rocks (sediments).

 Lithification- the process of taking sediments and creating a rock.
o Cementation (reacts with acid, expect to get red color rocks)
o Compaction- pressure squeezes the grains together until they stick to one another.
 Lithification for clastic or bioclastic
o Classified by grain size.
o Wentworth scale
 Gravel
 Angular= breccia rounded= conglomerate
 Sand
 Silt
 clay

Bioclastic- formed from shell fragments.

Chemical- rock precipitates from a solution
