Problem(s): Installation and configure NIC from Linux / Windows Operating System and
configure Local Area Network.

Objective: Student may install the Network Adapter and configure the LAN.

Prerequisite / Recommendations : Student should know System configuration of that Computer


and concept of LAN.

Theory:

Idea: Student can understand the Local Area Network, IP Address & Workgroup.

Solve: Do the following steps accordingly --->

Step 1 (From Fedora 8): Click on System → Administration → Network → A network


configuration wizard will appear → click on New tab → From Select Device wizard → Select
the Ethernet Connect → click on Forward tab → From Select Ethernet Device → Select your
appropriate Ethernet Card → From Configure Network Settings wizard → Choose DHCP /
Statically Set IP Addresses Give the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway(for Static IP
Address Setting) → From Create Ethernet Device wizard → Select Apply.

Step 2 (From Windows XP): Click on Start Menu → Click Settings → Click Control Panel →
Double Click on Add Hardware → From Add Hardware Wizard, click next →
If you already connect the NIC Card then click “yes” radio button →
Next → From Installed Hardware Select “Add a new hardware device” click next →

Choose “Install the hardware that I manually select from a list [Advanced] →
click next → Select “Network adapters” from common hardware types →
Now give your Lan Card Driver →
Click Next → Now “Completing the Add Hardware Wizard” is coming → click on Finish
Button.

Step 3: Right Click on “My Network Places” → Select Property → Choose your Local Area
Connection → Right Click and choose Property → Select the “Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) →
Click on Property → Now Select any one “Obtain an IP address automatically / Use the
following IP address” → Give the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway (for second
option) Click OK button.

Step 4: How to set the Workgroup and Computer Name Right Click on “My Computer” select
property 
Enter the computer name in the text box labeled "Computer Name." This is the name of the
computer that users will enter to access your network share files and folders. It's also the
name that's displayed when browsing network resources.
Enter the workgroup name. This name is used for all computers, so it should reflect the group
of computers. Click the "Ok" button to save the settings.

Restart the computer for the changes to take effect. Repeat these steps with other computers
on the network. The workgroup name is the same for all computers, but the computer name is
unique across the network.

To set the IP address, Subnetmask and the Gateway 

Go to Start and click on Control Panel. Control Panel window will appear. Double click on
Network Connections.

Network Connections window will appear. Right click correct Local Area Connection by
identifying correct network card and click Properties.

Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Click on Properties.

Output: ping successful, no data packet loss.
