Kgs 18 : 38,39 )

VIII. ANSWER IN DETAIL :

1. What was Elijah‟s challenge to the prophets of Baal to prove which God was the true God?
Explain.
Elijah said to the people, “I, even I only, remain a prophet of the Lord; but Baal‟s prophets
are four hundred and fifty men. Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one
bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress
the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under. And call ye on the name of your Gods
and I will call on the name of the Lord; and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God”.
( I Kgs 18 : 22 - 24 )

2. What did the prophets of Baal do when Elijah laid the condition: “the God that answereth by
fire, let him be God.”
The prophets of Baal took the bullock, which was given them and dressed it and called on the
name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, “O Baal hear us.” But there was no voice, nor any that
answered. And they leaped upon the altar, which was made. At noon Elijah mocked them and said
“Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or
peradventure he sleepeth and must be awaked”. When they heard that they cried aloud and they cut

And Elijah took twelve stones according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto
whom the word of the Lord came, saying Israel shall be thy name. And with the stones he built an
altar in the name of the Lord.
He made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed. He then
put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid it on the wood.
Then he asked them to pour four barrels of water, three times on the burnt sacrifice and on the
wood. And the water ran round about the altar and he filled the trench also with water. ( I Kgs 18 : 30
- 35 )

4. Having made ready the burnt sacrifice on Mount Carmel, how did Elijah pray for the fire of
the Lord to fall upon it?
At the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, Elijah prayed saying, “Lord God of
Abraham, Isaac and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy
servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

and said, “The Lord, He is the God, The Lord, He is the God.” Then Elijah slew all the prophets of
Baal at the brook Kishon.
He then went up to the top of Carmel and cast himself down upon the earth and fell on his

thus saith the Lord, “Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? In the place where dogs licked the
blood of Naboth shall the dogs lick thy blood even thine.” ( I Kgs 21 : 17-19)

VIII. ANSWER IN DETAIL :

1. Describe the incidence of Naboth being killed?
Naboth refused to give his vineyard to Ahab and therefore Jezebel wrote letters in the name
of Ahab, sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters unto the elders and the nobles that were in the
city where Naboth dwelt.
She wrote in the letters saying, “Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people.
Set two men, sons of Belial before him, to bear witness against him saying, Thou didst blaspheme
God and the King. Then carry him out, and stone him that he may die”. The men of the city, even the
elders and the nobles in the city, did as Jezebel sent letters unto them.
They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. There came two men,
children of Belial and witnessed against him in the presence of the people saying, Naboth did
blaspheme God and the King. Then they carried him out of the city and stoned him with stones that
he died. Then they sent word to Jezebel that, “Naboth is stoned and is dead.” ( I Kgs 21 : 8 - 14)

2. What was the Judgement of God said by Elijah upon Ahab and Jezebel?
The word of the Lord came to Elijah and he said to Ahab, “Behold, I will bring evil upon
thee, and will take away thy posterity, and will cut off from Ahab him that pisseth against the wall,
and him that is shut up and left in Israel. And will make thine house like the house of Jeroboam the
son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, for the provocation wherewith thou hast
provoked me to anger, and made Israel to sin.”
The Lord said about Jezebel, “The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel. Him that
dieth of Ahab in the city the dogs shall eat and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air
eat.” ( I Kgs 21 : 21-24)

Elisha said to Gehazi, “ Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thine hand, and go thy way : if
thou meet any man, salute him not : and if any salute thee, answer him not again : and lay my staff
upon the face of the child.” When Gehazi did so, there was meet neither voice, nor hearing. Therefore
he went to meet Elisha, and told him, the child is not awaked. ( II Kgs 4 : 29,31)

the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again.” And he said, “wherefore wilt thou go to
him today? It is neither new moon nor Sabbath.” And she said, “It shall be well.” Then she saddled an
ass and said to her servant, “Drive and go forward ; slack not thy riding for me, except I bid thee.” So
she went and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel and caught him by his feet and said, “Did I
desire a son of my Lord? Did I not say, do not deceive me.” ( II Kgs 4 : 21- 28 )
2. How did Elisha raise up alive the dead child of Shunammite?

word of Elilsha.
Elisha said unto them, “This is not the way, neither is this the city : follow me, and I will
bring you to the man whom ye seek.” But he led them to Samaria.
When they were come into Samaria, Elisha said, “Lord, open the eyes of these men, that they
may see.” The Lord opened their eyes, and they saw and behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.

1. Describe the sickness and the healing of King Hezekiah.

King Hezekiah was sick unto death. Then prophet Isaiah came to him and said, “thus saith
the Lord, set thine house in order, for thou shalt die and not live.” Hezekiah then turned his face to
the wall and prayed to the Lord saying, “I beseech thee O Lord remember now how I have walked
before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight.” And
Hezekiah wept sore.
The word of the Lord came to Isaiah immediately saying, “Tell, I have heard thy prayer, I
have seen thy tears. I will heal thee and on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the Lord.
I will add unto thy days fifteen years. I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the King of
Assyria. I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.”
When Hezekiah heard the words of the Lord, he asked Isaiah that the shadow should go
backwards by ten degrees, as a sign, that the Lord would heal him and he would go to the house of
the Lord. When Isaiah cried unto the Lord, he brought the shadow ten degrees backward by which

VIII. ANSWER IN DETAIL :

1. What was the vision seen by Peter at Joppa? What was the truth that God made Peter to
understand through that vision?
Peter, when he was at Joppa, saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as
it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth : Wherein were all manner
of four footed beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. ( Acts 10 :
11, 12 )
In that vision, there came a voice to him, “Rise, Peter; kill, and eat”. But Peter said, “Not so,
Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean”. And the voice spake unto him again
the second time, “What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common”. This was done thrice: and the
vessel was received up again into heaven. ( Acts 10 : 13 - 16 ). God, through the vision made Peter to

before God. The angel who was sent appeared in a vision and said to him, “now send men to Joppa, and
call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter: He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the
sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do”. ( Acts 10 : 5, 6 ) At this time, the Lord gave a
vision to Peter at Joppa. That is he saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it
had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth. And he heard a voice, “Rise,
Peter ; kill and eat”. But Peter said, “Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or
unclean”. And the voice spake unto him again the second time, “What God hath cleansed, that call not
thou common”. God, through the vision made Peter to understand the truth that, „what God has
cleansed not to call it common‟. Thus God prepared the heart of Peter even before the men sent by
Cornelius met him. Therefore Peter accepted the men sent by Cornelius, when they came in search of
him, and went along with them to the city of Caesarea, as the Holy Spirit led him. ( Acts 10 : 11-23).
Cornelius waited for them, and had called together his kinsmen and near friends. ( Acts 10 : 24 )While
Peter was preaching the words of God, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. Then
Peter commanded them to be baptized. ( Acts 10 : 44,48 ) Thus God worked for the salvation of the
household of Cornelius.
