Design Thinking Hackathon Assignment
Team Name: Visionaries
Team ID: 2047
Theme: Viksit Bharat 2047 - Environment, Waste & Circular Economy
Project Title: SmartDustbin 2047 - AI & IoT Powered Waste
Management
Step 1: Empathize
In our community, overflowing garbage bins in markets and residential colonies create
major hygiene issues. Stray animals scatter waste, producing foul smells and spreading
diseases. Residents, shopkeepers, and municipal workers are directly affected.
We conducted surveys with 40 residents, 15 shopkeepers, and interviewed 5 municipal
staff. We observed garbage overflow patterns for 10 days.
Example: Mrs. Joshi, a vegetable vendor, reported that unhygienic surroundings reduced
her customer footfall by 25%.
Step 2: Define
Problem Statement: Inefficient waste collection leads to overflowing bins, causing
unhygienic conditions, bad odor, and public health risks.
How Might We Question: How might we develop a smart waste management system that
ensures timely waste collection and clean surroundings?
Theme Connection: Environment, Waste, and Circular Economy - contributing to Swachh
Bharat and sustainable urban living by 2047.
Step 3: Ideate
Brainstormed Solutions:
1. IoT-based smart dustbins with fill sensors
2. AI-based garbage truck route optimization
3. EcoHive mobile app with reward-based recycling
4. Community complaint portal for waste reporting
Selected Idea: IoT-based SmartDustbin with real-time monitoring.
Step 4: Prototype
Solution Overview: SmartDustbin 2047 uses IoT sensors to detect waste levels and sends
alerts to municipal authorities for timely collection.
Technical Implementation: Sensors (ultrasonic, weight), Arduino/Raspberry Pi for
processing, cloud database (Firebase), and mobile/web dashboard for municipal staff.
Key Features:
- Real-time monitoring of dustbin fill levels
- Mobile app notifications to cleaning staff
- Data dashboard with analytics for waste management authority
Step 5: Test
Testing Strategy:
1. Shopkeepers: Will check market cleanliness before and after SmartDustbin deployment.
2. Municipal Workers: Will test the alert and route optimization features.
3. Residents: Will provide feedback on cleanliness and hygiene improvements.
Success Measurement:
- 70% reduction in overflowing bins.
- 85% user satisfaction from residents and shopkeepers.
- 90% accuracy in waste collection alerts.
