Smart Waste Management System - Design Thinking
Assignment
Step 1: Empathize
In our community, improper waste disposal is a significant problem. Overflowing dustbins,
unsegregated garbage, and lack of awareness have created unhygienic surroundings. Residents,
shopkeepers, and municipal workers are directly affected. We conducted surveys with 40 families,
interviewed 15 shopkeepers, and observed garbage collection for a week. A resident, Mr. Kumar, said,
‘The dustbin near our street overflows every two days, causing foul smell and mosquito breeding.’ This
highlights the urgent need for a smart solution.
Step 2: Define
Problem Statement: Garbage bins in residential areas overflow frequently, causing unhygienic
conditions and inconvenience to residents, while waste segregation is not practiced properly. How
Might We Question: How might we design a smart waste management system that ensures timely
waste collection, promotes segregation, and maintains a cleaner community?
Step 3: Ideate
Brainstormed Ideas: 1. IoT-enabled smart dustbins with fill-level sensors. 2. A mobile app for residents
to report garbage issues. 3. Reward-based recycling system with coupons/points. 4. AI-based garbage
segregation machine at collection centers. 5. Waste analytics dashboard for authorities. Selected Idea:
IoT-enabled smart dustbins with fill-level sensors connected to a central monitoring system.
Technology: IoT sensors (ultrasonic), mobile app, cloud-based dashboard, data analytics.
Step 4: Prototype
Solution Overview: Our prototype, “EcoBin Smart System,” uses IoT sensors to detect bin fill-levels. It
alerts municipal workers via an app when bins are nearly full. The app also tracks segregation status.
Technical Implementation: - Tools: Arduino/ESP32, ultrasonic sensors, Python for data processing,
Firebase for cloud storage, React Native for app. - Components: Smart bin with sensors, mobile app for
residents/workers, monitoring dashboard for authorities. - User Interaction: Residents can view bin
status, workers receive collection alerts, authorities analyze reports.
Step 5: Test
Testing Strategy: - Users: Residents, waste collectors, municipal authorities. - Residents will check app
updates about bin status and cleanliness drive participation. - Waste collectors will receive alerts and
confirm garbage pickup. - Authorities will monitor dashboard data for waste trends. Success
Measurement: 1. 50% reduction in overflowing bins. 2. 70% adoption of segregation at source. 3. 90%
collection alerts responded to within 12 hours. 4. 4.5/5 average user satisfaction rating.
