Critical Path and PERT Analysis Guide

Chapter 5 discusses network models including the Critical Path Method (CPM) and Project Evaluation Review Technique (PERT). It provides examples of calculating critical paths, total project duration, and variances for different project activities based on optimistic, most likely, and pessimistic time estimates. The chapter emphasizes the importance of these methods in project management for effective planning and scheduling.

Critical Path Method (CPM):

1) Given the following information:

Activity 0– 1– 1– 2– 2– 3– 3– 4– 5– 6–
1 2 3 4 5 4 6 7 7 7
Time 2 8 10 6 3 3 7 5 2 8

b) Identify the critical path
c) Find the total project duration.
d) Determine Total Float, Free Float, Independent Float
2) Given the following information

Activit 1– 1– 2– 2– 3– 4– 5– 6– 7–
y 2 3 4 5 5 6 7 8 8
Time 2 10 11 9 4 14 6 12 5

a) Draw the arrow diagram

Project Evaluation Review Technique (PERT):

Optimistic Time (To): Time will be taken to complete a task under extreme
well conditions

Most Likely Time (Tm): Under normal conditions

Pessimistic Time (Tp): Under poor conditions

Expected Time (TE): Possible estimated time to complete.

Variance (2):

Example:

1) A small project is composed of activities whose time estimates are listed

in the table below. The activities are identified by their beginning (i) and
ending (j) node numbers.

Activity 1–2 1–3 1–4 2–5 3–5 4–6 5–6

Optimistic (To) 1 1 2 1 2 2 3
Most Likely 1 4 2 1 5 5 6
(Tm)
Pessimistic (Tp) 7 7 8 1 14 8 15

a) Draw the project network

b) Find the expected duration and variance of each activity. What is the
expected project length?
c) Find the critical path. Calculate the variance and standard deviation of the
project length.
