Dear Shabana Mahmood,

I have read about your plans to return people with refugee status if their country
becomes safe, making illegal migrants wait for 20 years before gaining settlement status
and curb right to family life claims. Despite being a Labour government, with a high
migrant voter base, your policy has been applauded by the far right, such as Reform MPs
and Tommy Robinson. You claim that we have become ‘the destination of choice’ in
Europe, despite the fact that Germany received twice as many asylum claims as the UK
last year, with France, Spain and Italy receiving 1.5 times as many asylum claims as us.
Furthermore, your plans involve leaving illegal migrants for 20 years before even being
allowed to apply for permanent status, making integration into society almost
impossible. When Labour MP John McDonnell asked for assurance that no child would
be put in detention due to this policy, you declined to answer. You also plan to steal
assets from asylum seekers, such as jewellery, bicycles and watches, but you surely
don’t believe that this could raise reasonable revenue for the UK. This surely seems to
be designed as a gimmick, engineered to appeal to sadists. A Labour administration is
supposed to drive the country in a somewhat progressive direction, but after these new
asylum policies, the UK is shaping up to have one of the harshest asylum systems in the
UK. Do you believe that this is fair to the people who voted for you.
