I’m Daniel Reyes.

Guest 1:
And I’m Sophia Clarke.

Host 2:
Great. This week we’re joined by our guest team, and we’ll be hearing from them regularly this
month. I’d like to invite them to introduce themselves.

Guest 2:
Hello, my name is Daniel. I’m a writer and literature lecturer. I mostly write short stories and essays,
and my work has appeared in several national magazines. Recently, I received an award for my short
story The Silent Road.

Guest 1:
Hi, I’m Sophia Clarke. I’m a novelist and editor. I write young adult and fantasy fiction, and I’ve
published three novels so far. My most recent book is Beyond the Silver Gate.

Host 1:
And Sophia also works as a writing mentor.

Guest 1:
That’s right. (laughs)

Host 2:
Today, we’re going to talk about active characters. I want to bring this up early because I see many
students write characters who only observe events instead of influencing them. While that can work
in some stories, we usually want characters to make choices, take action, and shape the plot. So I’d
like to ask our guests: how do you make your characters more active?
