ABSTRACT
Background: Basic life support (BLS) is a set of emergency life-saving procedures for
patients with a life-threatening condition, such as cardiac arrest or respiratory distress. It
involves providing immediate care, including high-quality cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR),
Objectives: To assess the pre test knowledge level of Nursing students regarding basic
life support. To evaluate the effectiveness of Structured teaching program by comparing
pre test post test score. To assess the post test knowledge level of Nursing students
regarding basic life support. To find out the association between post test score and
demographic variables.
Methods: A Pre Experimental research design was used to collect the data using a
structured knowledge questionnaire from 40 nursing students based on non- probability
convenient sampling at college of Nursing ,AIMS, Sri Muktsar Sahib.
Results: The pre test knowledge of nursing students regarding basic life support was
assessed. In the pre test, 70% of students had poor knowledge, 20% students had
average knowledge and 10% students had good knowledge. In the post test, 15%
students had average knowledge and 85% students had good knowledge. The
improvement of knowledge after structured teaching program was 17.15±3.61. The
calculated t-value is 12.03 which is much greater than the critical value at 0.05 and
0.001 significant levels.
Conclusion: There was significant improvement in knowledge scores of nursing
students after the structured teaching program hence the intervention was effective in
improving the patient’s knowledge. It is also concluded that the demographic variables
like age, gender, residential area , type of course, education status of father, mother,
previous knowledge and source of information are not significant with level of
knowledge at significant level (p<.05)
