Crane Safety Evaluation and Redesign

The document evaluates the safety of a crane design by analyzing reaction forces and internal stresses, calculating maximum stress and safety factors. It identifies bending stresses in the crane, with tensile fibers on the upper part and compressive fibers on the lower part. A redesign is proposed to reinforce thickness, use stronger materials, and enhance the cross section for improved structural integrity.

1.

Evaluate the safety of crane:

Assume the initial design of crane follow the picture below

The crane has the cross section is an annulus with

inner radius diameter d and outer diameter D

Analyse the reaction on the crane I get the diagram of reaction force on crane AC

^

R B ;⃗
AC =α

We can solve each reaction forces by solve the system of equation:

{∑ Fx=0 :−R A x+¿ R B cos α =0 ¿ ∑ Fy=0 :−¿ R A y + R B sin α −P=0 ¿ ∑ M B =0 : R A y . AB−P . BC=0
After calculate the reaction force, I can find the internal force: normal force, shearing
force and moment
With the second moment of inertia I =∫ y dA

MD
The max stress at a cross section is σ =
2I
M D
The max stress on whole the crane is σ max= max
2I
σU
Then we can find safety factor of the crane is n s=
σ max
Shearing force chart

Analyse the stress we can find the figure

As we can see from the figure, the crane is bending and above part are tensile fibers and
below part are compressive fibers.
2. Propose a redesign based on your analysis:
We can redesign the crane by reinforce the thickness or using another material with
higher Ultimate strength σ U , using another structure has a bigger second moment of
inertial, strengthen the upper fibers and lower fibers that load high stress. Redesign the

crane’s cross section
