Thermochemistry

Chemistry for
Engineers

Module II

Prof. Florderliza O. Babat

i

Introduction
Our discussion will utilize the concepts of energy and heat. Although these terms are

somewhat familiar to us, we will need to have some definitions for our discussion. We

will focus on the basic principles of heat flow, calorimetry, enthalpy, thermochemical

equations, and bond energy.

Throughout the discussion, self-assessment questions (SAQ) are given for you

to monitor yourself if you understood the concept. Be sure to try answering them before

looking at the answer to self-assessment question (ASAQ) which is provided at the

last part of the module.

Objectives
At the end of this module, you should be able to:
1. Understand the basic principles of heat flow.

2. Discuss how enthalpy affects reaction.

3. Explain the use of calorimeter.

4. Write a thermochemical equation.

5. Solve problems on heat capacity, enthalpy and bond energy.

6. Analyze the heat effects in the bond breaking and bond formation.
