PERFORMANCE TASK: DESIGN YOUR OWN MINI RESEARCH STUDY

Part A: Research Title and Rationale

A Study on the Study Habits of Grade 11 Students in Relation to Their Academic
Performance

Study habits play a very important role in the academic success of students, especially at the
senior high school level where academic demands are higher. Grade 11 students are
expected to manage their time effectively, develop independent learning skills, and prepare
themselves for higher education or future careers. However, many students struggle with
maintaining effective study routines, which may affect their academic performance.

This study aims to examine the common study habits of Grade 11 students, such as the
number of hours spent studying, preferred study methods, and levels of distraction during
study time. By understanding these habits, the researcher can identify patterns that may
contribute positively or negatively to students’ academic performance. The results of this
study may help students become more aware of their own study behaviors and encourage
them to improve their learning strategies.

Furthermore, the findings of this research can be beneficial to teachers, parents, and school
administrators. Knowing the study habits of students may help teachers design better
instructional strategies and allow parents to provide academic support at home. Overall,
this study aims to help improve students’ academic performance through the development
of effective study habits.

Part B: Population, Sample Size, Sampling Technique, and Sample Size

Determination
The population of this study consists of all Grade 11 students of XYZ Senior High School,
with a total population of 200 students. To determine the appropriate sample size, the
researcher used Slovin’s Formula with a margin of error of 10%. Based on the computation,
a sample size of 50 students was obtained. This sample size is sufficient to represent the
population while remaining manageable in terms of time and resources.

The sampling technique used in this study is simple random sampling. To obtain the sample,
the researcher requested an official list of all Grade 11 students from the school
administration. Each student was assigned a number, and 50 numbers were randomly
selected using a lottery method. The students whose numbers were selected became the
respondents of the study. This method ensured that every student had an equal chance of
being selected, minimizing bias and increasing the reliability of the results.

Part C: Research Questionnaire

1. What is your sex? (Male / Female / Prefer not to say)
2. How many hours do you study each day? (Less than 1 hour / 1–2 hours / 3–4 hours /
More than 4 hours)

3. Where do you usually study? (Home / School / Library / Others)

4. Do you follow a regular study schedule? (Yes / No)

5. How often do you review your lessons? (Always / Often / Sometimes / Never)

6. Which time do you prefer for studying? (Morning / Afternoon / Evening / Night)

7. How often are you distracted while studying? (Always / Often / Sometimes / Never)

8. Do you take breaks while studying? (Always / Often / Sometimes / Never)

9. Do you believe your study habits affect your academic performance? (Strongly Agree /
Agree / Disagree / Strongly Disagree)

10. How would you rate your academic performance? (Excellent / Good / Fair / Poor)

Common questions

Self-reported measures of academic performance provide subjective data that can be correlated with study habits to assess their effectiveness. By comparing study practices with how students perceive their academic outcomes, the researcher can identify potential relationships and causal inferences about which habits are associated with better or worse performance .

The study aims to explore the correlation by examining various study habits, including the number of hours spent studying, preferred study environments, and distraction levels. Patterns identified through the research may reveal how these habits contribute either positively or negatively to students' academic performance . By analyzing the survey responses, the researcher can assess the impact of these variables on academic success .

The findings can inform teachers about common student study habits, enabling them to design better instructional strategies that align with students' study practices . For parents, understanding these habits could help them provide targeted academic support at home, create a conducive study environment, and reinforce effective study behaviors in their children .

Focusing on Grade 11 students is significant because this year is crucial for preparing for higher education or career paths, and study habits developed at this stage can have lasting impacts. It's a time when students face heightened academic demands, making it essential to understand and improve their study habits to ensure success .

The inclusion of questions about distractions and break frequency helps to identify habits that could influence the effectiveness of study sessions. By analyzing these factors, the researcher can assess how external and internal interruptions impact academic performance and adjust strategies to improve focus and engagement .

Slovin’s Formula with a 10% margin of error is used to calculate the sample size that accurately represents the population without requiring a complete census. This ensures that the chosen sample of 50 students sufficiently reflects the characteristics of the entire 200-student population while remaining feasible in terms of resources and time .

The study employs simple random sampling to select participants. This technique is appropriate because it ensures that every Grade 11 student at XYZ Senior High School has an equal chance of being selected, thereby minimizing selection bias and increasing the reliability and validity of the results . The use of a lottery method helps maintain randomness in selection .

To ensure valid and reliable results, the researcher must ensure a comprehensive and accurate list of the population, avoid biases during the selection process, and maintain consistency in the method used to select students randomly. Every participant must genuinely have an equal opportunity to be selected to prevent skewed results .

Understanding study environments allows the researcher to assess the potential influence of location on study effectiveness and distractions. By identifying which environments support better concentration and outcomes, the study can recommend optimal study settings. This insight aids in developing strategies and guidelines for students to enhance their learning experience .

The study's results can highlight key areas where study habits specifically impact academic performance, thereby guiding the creation of tailored educational interventions. For instance, programs can be developed to enhance time management skills, reduce distraction levels, and encourage effective review practices, all of which could subsequently improve students’ overall academic performance .
