Human Reproduction Overview and Systems

Human reproduction is a sexual process involving the fertilization of a female gamete by a male gamete, leading to the development of a zygote into a baby. The male and female reproductive systems have distinct structures and functions, including sperm and egg production, hormone secretion, and support for fertilization and embryo development. Key processes include gamete formation, the menstrual cycle, fertilization, implantation, and birth, all essential for the continuity of the human species.

HUMAN REPRODUCTION – DETAILED NOTES

1. What is Human Reproduction?

Human reproduction is a sexual mode of reproduction in which:

• A male gamete (sperm) fertilizes a female gamete (ovum/egg)

• This leads to the formation of a zygote
• The zygote develops into an embryo, then a foetus, and finally a baby

2. HUMAN REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEMS

Humans have separate reproductive systems in males and females.

A. MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

Functions:

• Produces sperms
• Produces male sex hormone (testosterone)
• Delivers sperms to the female body

Main Parts and Their Functions:

1. Testes

• A pair of oval-shaped organs located in the scrotum

• Function:
o Produce sperms
o Produce testosterone
• Scrotum keeps testes at a lower temperature, necessary for sperm formation

2. Scrotum

• A pouch of skin outside the body

• Maintains testes at about 2–3°C lower than body temperature

3. Epididymis
• A long coiled tube on each testis
• Stores sperms and allows them to mature

4. Vas Deferens (Sperm Duct)

• Transports sperms from epididymis to urethra

5. Seminal Vesicles

• Produce a fluid rich in sugars

• Provides energy to sperms

6. Prostate Gland

• Adds alkaline fluid

• Protects sperms from acidic conditions

7. Urethra

• Common passage for urine and semen

• Opens through the penis

8. Penis

• External reproductive organ

• Transfers sperms into the female reproductive tract

B. FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

Functions:

• Produces ova (eggs)

• Receives sperms
• Supports fertilization
• Nourishes the developing baby

Main Parts and Their Functions:

1. Ovaries

• A pair of oval organs in the abdomen

• Functions:
o Produce ova
o Produce female hormones:
▪ Oestrogen
▪ Progesterone

2. Fallopian Tubes (Oviducts)

• Connect ovaries to the uterus

• Functions:
o Carry ovum from ovary to uterus
o Fertilization occurs here

3. Uterus (Womb)

• A thick, muscular organ

• Functions:
o Site of implantation
o Nourishes the developing embryo
o Protects the foetus

4. Cervix

• Narrow lower part of the uterus

• Opens into the vagina
• Keeps the foetus inside the uterus during pregnancy

5. Vagina

• Muscular tube
• Functions:
o Receives sperms during mating
o Acts as the birth canal
o Passage for menstrual flow

3. GAMETE FORMATION
Spermatogenesis (in males)

• Formation of sperms in the testes

• Begins at puberty
• Produces millions of sperms daily

Oogenesis (in females)

• Formation of ova in the ovaries

• Usually one ovum released every 28 days

4. MENSTRUAL CYCLE
• Occurs every 28–30 days
• If fertilization does not occur:
o The uterine lining breaks down
o Blood and tissue flow out through vagina (menstruation)
• Stops during pregnancy

5. FERTILIZATION
• Fusion of sperm and ovum
• Occurs in the fallopian tube
• Forms a zygote
• Zygote divides repeatedly and moves to the uterus

6. IMPLANTATION & DEVELOPMENT

• Zygote implants in uterine wall
• Develops into:
o Embryo (early stage)
o Foetus (after 8 weeks)
• Placenta forms to supply:
o Oxygen
o Nutrients
o Remove wastes

7. BIRTH
• Pregnancy lasts about 9 months (280 days)
• Baby is born through the vagina
• Process is called parturition
8. IMPORTANCE OF REPRODUCTION
• Continuity of the human species
• Transfer of genetic information
• Variation in offspring
