Completing my educational internship at SCALI has been one of the most meaningful and
transformative experiences in my academic journey. When I first learned that I would be
deployed in an educational setting, a flood of questions and uncertainties began to occupy my
mind. I wondered whether I was ready for the responsibilities that awaited me. Magagawa ko ba
o hindi? Kaya ko kaya? Paano kung hindi? These thoughts reflected both my excitement and
nervousness about what was to come. However, as the days passed, these worries slowly evolved
into learning, growth, and memories that I will carry with me long after the internship has ended.
One of the earliest and most impactful realizations I had was the difference between the school
environment I grew up in and the one I entered as an intern. As a public school graduate, I
became fully aware of the contrast between public and private institutions, especially in terms of
student services, guidance operations, and the level of support available. The moment I stepped
inside SCALI’s Guidance and Counseling Office, I immediately noticed how organized,
welcoming, and student-centered the environment was. While waiting for Ma’am Franz on my
first day, I observed students casually entering the office some just to greet, some to bless the
staff, and some to simply seek comfort. That alone showed me how guidance services can shape
a school’s culture and how much influence counselors and staff have in creating safe, accessible
spaces for learners.
Throughout the internship, it became clear to me that being part of a guidance office is far from
simple. Each day, the team encountered students with a wide range of concerns from academic
struggles to personal issues, misunderstandings among peers, and even situations that required
careful emotional support. Witnessing these interactions allowed me to understand the depth of
patience, empathy, and professionalism needed in this field. I learned that guidance work is not
just about providing advice; it also requires active listening, maintaining confidentiality, and
responding without bias. There were moments when the stories we encountered were heavy, and
I realized how important emotional stability and groundedness are in this profession. Despite the
challenges, each experience helped strengthen my ability to remain calm, supportive, and
understanding in situations that demanded sensitivity.
At the same time, my internship challenged me to improve my communication and interpersonal
skills. Interacting with students of different ages especially those in kindergarten and elementary
trained me to adjust my approach depending on the developmental stage of the child I was
dealing with. I learned how to communicate in ways that were clear, gentle, and appropriate for
younger learners. On the other hand, assisting older students required a more mature and
respectful tone, especially when they sought guidance regarding academic performance, peer
conflicts, or emotional concerns. These experiences sharpened my adaptability and allowed me
to see the importance of tailoring communication based on the needs and backgrounds of those
we assist.
Another significant part of my internship experience was working closely with my co-interns. At
first, I expected to go through the internship quietly, focusing only on my tasks, as I had always
grown used to working independently throughout college. However, this internship changed that
perspective completely. Despite starting out as strangers, my co-interns quickly became people I
felt comfortable with. We shared stories, helped each other with tasks, and supported one another
through busy days. The sense of belonging and teamwork that developed among us made the
internship not only productive but also genuinely enjoyable. It was refreshing to feel heard,
understood, and accepted after years of feeling like I always had to do things on my own. This
experience taught me that collaboration is not just about dividing work; it is about learning from
one another, building trust, and forming bonds that make the learning process more meaningful.
Professionally, the internship strengthened my resolve to pursue a career within the educational
setting. For years, whenever professors asked which field I wanted to specialize in, I confidently
answered “Educational Setting.” I always believed I would excel in this environment because I
love assisting students, monitoring classroom activities, and doing tasks that resemble student-
teaching responsibilities. The internship affirmed this belief. It allowed me to discover how
natural it felt for me to be involved in school operations, particularly in guidance services. It
gave me a clearer understanding of the responsibilities, the challenges, and the impact of the role
and instead of feeling intimidated, I felt even more inspired.
The skills I developed during this period go beyond technical tasks. I learned time management
through balancing documentation, assisting students, completing assigned duties, and meeting
requirements. I strengthened my organizational skills by handling forms, student records, and
other office tasks. I grew more confident in conducting interactions and responding to concerns.
But beyond these, the most important skills I gained were patience, empathy, and emotional
maturity. These are qualities that cannot be learned solely through lectures they must be
developed through experience, and this internship provided the perfect space for that growth.
Overall, my educational internship at SCALI played a crucial role in shaping my professional
identity. It helped me see the importance of compassion in education, the value of creating safe
spaces for learners, and the impact guidance services can have on a student’s academic and
personal development. More importantly, it affirmed my commitment to eventually work in an
environment where I can guide, support, and empower students. This experience solidified my
future goal of becoming a competent, reliable, and compassionate professional in the educational
field. I am truly grateful for the knowledge, experiences, and relationships I gained throughout
this internship, and I will carry them with me as I continue pursuing my career.
