Pressure Correction Technique in CFD

The document discusses the Pressure Correction Technique for incompressible flow in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), highlighting the stability criterion for the MacCormack time marching method. It emphasizes the need for a staggered grid to address unrealistic velocity and pressure distributions, and introduces the Pressure Correction Method as an iterative approach to solve these issues. Additionally, it outlines the SIMPLE procedure for pressure-linked equations and boundary conditions relevant to the pressure correction method.

CFD For Incompressible Flow

Saturday, December 20, 2025 6:59 AM

The Pressure Correction Technique

Stability criterion for MacCormack time marching (explicit)

Where a is the speed of sound. Since for an incompressible flow the speed of sound is infinite, time-step size
approaches zero.

The Need for Staggered Grid

The above unrealistic velocity distribution satisfies eqn (6.83). This is not acceptable.

Similarly, same happens for pressure gradient in the momentum equation

The above pressure distribution gives zero pressure gradient.

One solution to this problem is to use staggered grid.

Pressure is calculated at solid points. Velocity is calculated on empty points.

The Pressure Correction Method

An iterative method:
