Reflecting on Learning South African Sign Language (SASL)
Hi everyone,
I'd really appreciate your honest feedback about learning SASL this year. Your answers will help
us improve the course for future students.

1. Did you enjoy learning SASL? or Why did you enjoy it, or why didn't you?
I thoroughly enjoyed learning SASL. It was more than just learning a new language; it was
an immersive introduction to a rich and vibrant culture. I found it incredibly rewarding to
start building the skills to communicate visually and spatially, and it felt like a very engaging
and active form of learning.
2. What's one thing you think the next lecturer should do differently next year? (e.g.,
more practice time, different teaching methods, etc.)
I would suggest incorporating more small-group, ungraded practice sessions during class.
While the lectures were great for learning the theory and seeing demonstrations, having
dedicated, low-pressure time to practice the signs with peers would build confidence and
help solidify the muscle memory without the stress of being formally assessed.
3. Did you use any other SASL apps or websites this year (besides the NID app)? If yes,
please tell us which ones and how helpful they were.
Yes, I did use a few other resources: YouTube Channels (e.g., SABC, Someleze Dlakavu):
Extremely helpful for seeing signs used in real-world contexts like news broadcasts and
vlogs. It was great for building vocabulary and comprehension at different speeds.
SignTutor: This website was useful for looking up specific vocabulary. The video dictionary
format was straightforward, though the interface felt a bit dated compared to modern apps.
4. If you used the NID app: Please give us specific feedback on it. Did it help you learn and
practice?
The NID app was a valuable resource. The video demonstrations were clear and essential for
seeing how signs are formed. It was very helpful for reviewing vocabulary before tests.
• The user interface can be a bit slow and clunky to navigate.
• It would be fantastic if the app included more interactive quizzes or games to test recall,
rather than just being a video dictionary.
• A feature to slow down the playback of the videos would be very useful for beginners
learning complex signs.
5. What is one thing I (your current lecturer) can work on to improve the course for the
future?
You are a fantastic and passionate lecturer. One small area for enhancement could be to
provide even more varied examples and contexts for the same sign. Sometimes a sign can
have multiple meanings or be used slightly differently. Hearing you use it in 2-3 different
short sentences would help deepen our understanding beyond the primary translation.
6. Is there anything else you want the teaching team to know about your experience?
(This can be about the course, the workload, resources, etc.)
I just want to express my sincere gratitude. The course was well-structured, and your
passion for SASL and Deaf culture was infectious and made the learning environment very
positive. The workload felt appropriate for the level of the course. Thank you for a wonderful
and enlightening experience
