CE416 Prestressed Concrete Design Quiz

This document outlines Quiz 3 for CE416: Prestressed Concrete Design, due on May 13, 2025, with a total of 50 points available. It includes three problems that require calculations related to prestressed concrete beams and slabs, considering various loads and prestressing forces. Each problem consists of multiple parts that ask for specific stress determinations and maximum load calculations under given conditions.

QUIZ 3 FOR CE416: PRESTRESSED CONCRETE DESIGN

Due: Tuesday - May 13, 2025 at 12 noon sharp

Points: Each required is worth 5 points.
Total Points: 50 points
Deduction:
1 hr late – minus 10 pts
2 hr late – mnius 20 pts
> 3 hr late – minus 30 pts
> 8 hrs late – not to be accepted
PROBLEM 1:
A prestressed concrete beam having a cross section of 500mm x 800mm is subjected to prestressing force
of 2000 kN acting on the single bent-up tendon profile as shown. The beam carries a uniform dead load of
20 kN/m excluding its own weight and a uniform live load of 11 kN/m. The concrete weighs 23.5 kN/m 3.
Consider 8% lass of prestress at service loads. Solve the following using any method.

a. The top stress felt by the PC beam at the ends after transfer of prestressing force.
b. The bottom stress felt by PC beam at midspan under service loads.
c. The maximum compressive stress felt by the prestressed concrete beam under service loads.
PROBLEM 2:
Prestressed hollow core slabs with typical section shown in the figure are used for the flooring of the
supermarket slab is simply supported on a span of 8 m. The slab is prestressed with 920 kN force at a
distance 40 mm above the bottom of the section. Consider 15% loss of prestress at service loads. Allowable
stresses ats service loads are 2 MPa in tension and 15.5MPa in compression. The slab properties are as
follows:
A = 1.4 x 105 mm2
St = Sb = 6.8 x 106 mm3
a = 1.2 m
b = 200 mm
Slab weight = 2.7 kPa
Superimposed Dead Load = 2.0 kPa
Live Load 2.9 kPa

a. Determine the stress at the top fibers of the slab at the ends due to the initial prestress force alone.
b. Determine the resulting stress at top fibers of the slab at midspan due to the loads and prestress
force.
c. Determine the maximum total load (kN/m) including its own weight, that the slab can be subjected to
if the allowable stress at service loads is not to be exceeded.
PROBLEM 3:
A PC beam having a cross section as shown is subjected to a prestressing force of 2450 kN acting on a
parabolic tenson shown. The beam is simply supported on a span of 8 m. The beam carries a uniform dead
load of 10 kN/m excluding its own weight and a concentrated live load at midpoint of 5 kN. The concrete
weighs 23.54 kN/m3. Consider 8% loss of prestress at service loads. Allowable stresses at service loads are
0.25 mPa in tension and 15.5 mPa in compression.

a. Determine the resulting stress at the top fiber of the beam at midspan after the transfer.
b. Determine the resulting stress at the bottom fiber of the beam at midspan at service load.
c. Determine the resulting stress at the top fiber of the beam at midspan at service load.
d. Determine the maximum total load (kN/m) including its own weight, that the beam can be
subjected to if the allowable stress at service loads is not to be exceeded.
