6. EXECUTION PROCEDURE
6.1 Surface Preparation (Mandatory Inspection Point)

1. Cleaning: The substrate must be clean, dry, sound, and free from loose particles, dust, oil,
grease, curing compounds, and sharp projections.
2. Defect Rectification: All cracks, honeycombs, and minor defects shall be repaired using
approved repair mortar.
3. Coves/Fillets: Cementitious coves (minimum 50x50mm) shall be provided at all horizontal-to-
vertical junctions (parapet wall base, column bases) to prevent membrane tearing.
4. Inspection: The prepared surface shall be formally offered for inspection and approval prior to
any application.

6.2 Primer Application

1. The approved AIWIN PASTA-3 Bitumen Emulsion Primer is cold-applied. It must be mixed well
before use.
2. Apply the primer uniformly to the approved dry concrete surface using a brush or roller. The
coverage rate shall be approximately 2 to 3 square meters per liter per coat.
3. The primer must be allowed to cure and become completely tack-free before the membrane
installation begins.

6.3 Membrane Installation (Torch Application)

1. Lay-out: The POLYFLEX / STRONG GOLD sheets shall be laid out first (dry-fit) to confirm
alignment, staggering of joints, and cutting to size.
2. Upstands and Details: Membrane flashing shall be installed first on all vertical surfaces and
details, extending to the required height (minimum 150 mm).
3. Torching: The main rolls are then installed using the torch method. Heat is applied to the
underside of the membrane and the primed substrate simultaneously.
o The bitumen must be heated until a molten flow (bead) appears at the edges of the roll.
o The membrane must be pressed firmly onto the substrate for immediate, full adhesion.
4. Overlaps: Maintain a minimum side overlap of 100 mm (10 cm) and a minimum end overlap of
150 mm (15 cm).
5. Sealing: Use a hand roller to press and seal all overlaps, ensuring a continuous bitumen bead is
extruded to indicate a complete watertight seal.

5
7. QUALITY CONTROL & TESTING
7.1 Water Ponding Test (Mandatory Hold Point)

1. Preparation: Upon completion and QC approval of the membrane installation, temporarily plug
all roof drains/outlets.
2. Flooding: Flood the entire area with potable water to a minimum depth of 50 mm (5 cm).
3. Duration: The water must remain ponded for a minimum period of 24 to 48 hours, as specified.
4. Inspection: The soffit (underside of the roof slab) shall be regularly inspected for any signs of
dampness or leakage during the entire test period.
5. Action: Upon successful completion (no leaks observed), the water must be drained
immediately. Any failed area shall be marked, repaired, and retested.

8. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
1. Hot Works: Obtain and display a valid Hot Works Permit before starting any torching activity.
2. Fire Watch: A dedicated Fire Watch must be stationed during and for 30 minutes after all
torching operations, equipped with fire extinguishers.
3. PPE: Full PPE, including heat-resistant gloves, face shields (where necessary), and fire-
retardant clothing, is mandatory for all workers.
4. Storage: Store gas cylinders and flammable materials (Primer) in designated, shaded, and well-
ventilated areas away from the torching activity.

Common questions

Post-installation quality control is ensured primarily through a water ponding test. This involves sealing drains to flood the membrane-covered roof area with water for 24 to 48 hours, checking for leaks by monitoring the soffit for dampness or leakage signs. Successfully passing this test confirms the waterproofing's integrity .

The document specifies the materials for installation: the SBS Modified Bitumen Membrane (4mm thick) produced by POLYFLEX, the Bitumen Emulsion Primer AIWIN PASTA-3, and protective elements like a protection board or cementitious screed. These materials have received the required approvals for use in the project .

Gas torches are used for the torch application of the SBS Modified Bitumen Membrane. They heat the underside of the membrane and the primed substrate simultaneously until molten bitumen appears, ensuring the membrane is pressed for immediate adhesion. This technique helps achieve full bonding and secure installation .

The QC Inspector is responsible for performing all mandatory inspections. This includes checking the readiness of the surface, the coverage and curing of the primer, the integrity of overlap on the membrane, and observing the water ponding test to ensure no leaks occur .

Surface preparation is critical and a mandatory inspection point because it ensures that the substrate is clean, dry, structurally sound, and free from any particles that could prevent effective adhesion of the membrane. This step prevents issues like membrane tearing or detachment, thus ensuring the longevity and effectiveness of the waterproofing system .

Safety compliance during installation is ensured through several measures: acquiring a Hot Works Permit, maintaining a dedicated Fire Watch during and after torch activity, ensuring all workers wear full personal protective equipment (PPE), and storing gas cylinders and flammable materials in designated safe areas .

The Bitumen Emulsion Primer is applied using a brush or roller to ensure uniform coverage on the dry concrete surface. Proper application is crucial as it promotes full adhesion of the subsequent membrane and needs to become completely tack-free before membrane installation, ensuring the primer creates a suitable base for the membrane .

Safety precautions during torching operations include obtaining a Hot Works Permit, a fire watch with extinguishers during and after torching, mandatory use of PPE like heat-resistant gloves and fire-retardant clothing, and the storage of gas cylinders and flammable materials in designated, shaded, and ventilated areas, away from torching activities .

The inspection requirements for the water ponding test involve plugging all drains and flooding the roof area with water to a depth of at least 50 mm, maintaining the water for 24 to 48 hours. Regular inspections are conducted to determine if the soffit below shows any leakage or dampness, indicating failure, thus necessitating repairs and a retest. Successful completion is determined by no leaks .

The method statement outlines a detailed procedure for the effective installation of the SBS Modified Bitumen Membrane roofing system. It includes surface preparation where the substrate must be cleaned, defects are rectified, and coves are provided at junctions. Primer application follows, using the AIWIN PASTA-3 Bitumen Emulsion Primer applied uniformly and allowed to cure. The membrane installation involves dry fitting the POLYFLEX sheets, installing membrane flashing on vertical surfaces followed by torching to adhere the main rolls, maintaining specific overlap requirements, and sealing overlaps with a roller. Finally, quality control is ensured through a water ponding test to check for leaks .
