The Problem and its Background
Introduction
This chapter of the paper presents the problem and its background. It includes the
background of the study, the statement of the problem, the hypothesis, the
significance of the study, the scope and limitations, the conceptual framework, and
the definition of terms.
Background of the Study
The increasing dependence on mobile devices for communication, business, and
free time results in a high need for reliable and portable charging solutions. Mobile
phones are one of the essential parts of daily life, often experiencing fast battery
depletion caused by overuse. Traditional power banks have addressed this issue,
but their dependency on pre-charged electricity limits their usefulness in faraway or
outdoor. This study aims to look at the possibility of a smart portable charging case
with an auto-detected solar-powered light that not only increases battery life but
also supports sustainability and energy efficiency.
Solar energy is a reliable and ecologically friendly source that can significantly
improve portable charging solutions. Solar panels installed in charging cases enable
owners to charge on the go without depend on typical electricity. Furthermore, the
auto-detection mechanism facilitates energy harvesting by adjusting itself to the
lighting conditions, making the mobile device very adaptable to many kinds of
conditions. This innovation aligns with global sustainability goals and promotes
greener technology practices in everyday mobile devices. Studies, such as that of
Sharma et al. (2021), it showed the growing potential of solar-powered devices in
reducing carbon footprints.
One of the challenges faced by portable solar-powered chargers is efficiency,
particularly in dark places or during indoor use. To address this, with the smart
technology, such as sensors for auto-detection of light, it can optimize energy
collection and conversion. It also makes sure that owners can use the devices in any
kind of situation, enhancing their comfort and experience. According to Huang et al.
(2020), advances in photovoltaic materials and intelligent systems have created
more efficient and compact solar-powered solutions that may be used in everyday
accessories.
The concept of a smart charging case with a solar-powered light also highlights the
importance of multi-functionality in modern devices. Beyond charging mobile
phones, these cases can provide additional features, such as protection, aesthetic
appeal, and emergency lighting. Showcase flexibility attracts to a wide range of
owners, especially those who like outdoor activities or live in places with
unpredictable electricity. Liu and Wang (2019) observed that customers are
increasingly preferring multi-functional and sustainable technologies.
In conclusion, a proposed smart portable charging case studies the challenge of
energy inefficiency and ease in mobile phone use. It offers a sustainable solution
that is in line with modern environmental and technological trends using solar
energy and smart technology. The study will look into the unique device's
appearance, functioning, and potential for market, adding to the broader discourse
about renewable energy integration in devices used by owners.

Review of Related Literature
Introduction
This chapter reviews articles, books, and other documents related to the research
topic. It is about both local and foreign literature. Foreign literature contains data
and studies done with other countries, while local literature contains those done in
the Philippine context.
Local Related Literature
According to Pangan et al. (2024), they studied the design of a mobile power
charging station using solar and thermoelectric harvesting. They aim to address the
challenges of Philippine energy accessibility and sustainability, finding a feasible,
efficient, and innovative design that efficiently generates renewable energy,
enhancing mobile device charging capabilities. Their study informs the development
of innovative devices such as smart portable charging cases with auto-detected
solar-powered lights for mobile phones.
Sikat (2024) study on solar-powered phone charging effectively assesses
portable and stationary options, providing important insights into efficiency and
usability. The research shows that it is possible to have a solar panel in the phone
case, which improves comfort and makes it easier to charge the mobile device when
we suddenly need it.
According to Engr. Abigail N. Gonazales and Dr. Norma B. Muyot (July 2022),
the use of renewable energy, especially solar power, has gained increasing
importance due to the limited availability of fossil fuels. A study focused on
developing a portable solar-powered charging station equipped with a servomotor,
light sensor, and solar tracking system using Arduino Uno. The prototype aimed to
assess its functionality, aesthetics, durability, safety, and efficiency in charging.
The study, "Solar-Powered Coin-Operated Mobile Charging Station for
Sustainable Energy Access and Resilience" by Eric P. Catalan et al. (2023),
investigates the creation of a coin-operated mobile charging station powered by
solar energy. This system, which includes an integrated storage battery, is intended
for business use as well as emergency charging during power disruptions. Its
portable design allows for continuous device charging in the presence of sunlight,
providing an innovative solution for energy sustainability and accessibility. This
study emphasizes the practical use of solar power for mobile device charging.
The study of Solar-Powered Devices in the Philippines in recent years, there
has been significant progress in the adoption of solar-powered technologies in the
Philippines. A study by the Department of Energy (DOE) in 2023 indicated that solar-
powered devices, including chargers, have seen increased implementation due to
frequent power shortages and the country’s heavy reliance on renewable energy
sources. Solar-powered mobile phone chargers are part of a growing market aimed
at addressing power supply inconsistencies in rural and off-grid areas. This aligns
with the country's long-term energy goals of promoting sustainability and reducing
reliance on fossil fuels.
Foreign Related Literature
The study of Kuandikov,, Daniyar, Nargiz, Nayimjon, Pradeep, A., & 2023
IEEE Fifth International Conference on Advances in Electronics, Computers and
Communications (ICAECC) (2023) explored the development of a solar-powered
phone case, integrating solar panels for charging smartphones. The case aims to
reduce the carbon footprint of smartphone usage and provide 10-15% battery
capacity within 50 minutes, addressing low battery capacity issues.
According to Daniel and Daniel (2024), Solar-powered EV (Electronic Vehicle)
charging stations could revolutionize the EV revolution by increasing charging
efficiency, meeting demand, and improving the environment. These stations
convert sunlight into electricity, with panels converting sunlight into EV-compatible
alternating current electricity. They can be residential, commercial, or public and
require varying panel sizes, advanced inverters, and storage capabilities. Solar
power systems have proven their energy efficiency, offering four benefits: reduced
environmental impact, economic incentives, clean energy initiatives, and energy
independence.
According to International Journal of Engineering Research Sarna Majumber,
Arif Kaiser, Olly Roy Chowdhury and MD. Forhad Hossain (September 24, 2021)
Mobile devices are constantly in use, leading to frequent battery depletion, which
can be particularly inconvenient for people on the move. The need for instant
recharging creates an opportunity for renewable energy-based charging solutions,
allowing devices to be charged anytime and anywhere.
As portable electronic devices become more popular, the need for
sustainable power sources is growing. Many studies focus on solar-powered
solutions, particularly phone cases that integrate solar panels to charge
smartphones. Research highlights the importance of solar panel efficiency, energy
conversion, and material selection in improving these devices' performance. Battery
life remains a major concern for smartphone users, with surveys indicating it is a
top issue. One solution proposed is phone cases with solar charging and wireless
capabilities, which could provide 10-15% battery charge in just 50 minutes of
sunlight exposure. Historically, phone cases served mainly for protection, while
solar energy was used in off-grid areas, but combining these technologies could
offer an effective way to address battery life challenges in smartphones.
Mobile phone battery life is a common issue, and solar charging offers a
potential solution. Research has explored integrating solar panels into phone cases
for both protection and charging. Companies like Voltaic Systems have
demonstrated this approach. Lithium-ion batteries are used for energy storage, but
efficiency and design remain challenges. solar-powered phone cases are a
promising solution, with ongoing advancements expected to improve their
practicality and adoption.
