Oxygen Container Assembly for Aircraft

The Oxygen Container Assembly is designed for passenger aircraft to provide oxygen during emergencies when cabin pressure is lost. It includes a chemical oxygen generator, two mask assemblies, and a container box assembly, with the generator producing oxygen upon activation and the masks delivering it to passengers. The system operates automatically when cabin pressure decreases, releasing masks and starting oxygen flow for approximately 15 to 22 minutes.

OXYGEN CONTAINER ASSEMBLY

1. Are used on passenger aircraft which have pressurized cabins. They

supply the passengers with the necessary quantity of oxygen during
emergency (accidental loss of the cabin pressure in a high flight altitude).
2. The Oxygen Container contains :
 a chemical oxygen generator,
 2 mask assemblies,
 a container box assembly.
3. chemical oxygen generator
The chemical oxygen generator has a stainless steel housing filled with
Sodium
Chlorate (NACLO3). It has an outlet manifold with two fittings for the
connection of
The mask supply tubes.
The oxygen generator has a firing pin at the starter side. A release pin
hold the firing pin in position. If the release pin has been removed
the oxygen generator starts the production of oxygen. The flow of oxygen
cannot be stopped.
The release pin has an eyelet for the connection of the mask lanyards.
The oxygen generator has an indicator dot on its starter side that shows
the condition
of the oxygen generator as follows:
- If the indicator dot is painted BLUE the oxygen generator has been
BURNED OUT.
- If the indicator dot is painted PINK the oxygen generator is NEW or NOT
USED.
4. The Mask Assemblies
The mask assemblies are installed on the ejector strips of the container
assembly.
The two ejector strips are connected to the box and the door assy.
The mask assemblies are connected to the chemical oxygen generator
by supply
tubes and lanyards.
Each mask assembly is an oronasal phase-dilution type which has a
rubber face
piece with a valve housing. It supplies the oxygen flow from its reservoir
bag and has a small dilution by ambient air, also it lets escape the
exhaled air.
The valve housing contains 3 valves-dilution, exhalation and bag valve.
[Link] Container Box Assembly consists of:
• a spring loaded Door Assembly,
• a Box Assembly.
6. Opreation
The Oxygen Container operates as a part of the aircraft emergency oxygen
system. It is installed into the aircraft passenger compartment to supply the
passenger with the necessary quantity of oxygen during emergency.

An accidental decrease of the cabin pressure activates a cabin pressure

sensor. An
electrical pulse to the electrically operated door actuator unlocks the door
assembly so that the masks can fall out. After the masks have been
released from the OXYGEN CONTAINER they hang down over the
passengers head on their lanyards.
The lanyards are connected to a release pin that is installed on the firing pin of
the oxygen
generator. In this condition the oxygen generator is prepared for emergency
oxygen
supply. A pull to one or all masks removes the release pin and lets the firing pin
move into
the oxygen generator. This causes the ignition and reaction of the chemicals
within the
oxygen generator and starts the production of oxygen. When the flow of oxygen
started, it
cannot be stopped until the oxygen generator is empty (after 15/22 minutes).

The oxygen flows with low pressure from the oxygen generator outlet fittings
through the mask supply tube and the reservoir bag (inflates) into the mask
assembly. A flow indicator installed in the mask supply tubes shows the correct
oxygen flow.

7. Mask Operation
The oxygen flows through the reservoir bag and a bag valve (non-return type)
into the
mask face piece.
(1) Inhalation
The passenger breathes in:
• the depression of the reservoir bag lifts the bag valve,
• the oxygen flows as long as the reservoir bag is empty.
The passenger continues to breathe in:
the dilution valve lifts (non-return type),
• this lets the ambient air go into the mask face piece.
(2) Exhalation
The passenger breathes out:
• the dilution and the bag valve close,
• the exhalation valve opens and the air breathed out is bled.
During breathe out, the oxygen:
• continues to flow through the mask supply tube (via the flow indicator),
• inflates the reservoir bag for the next inhalation.
