INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM

Definition:
The integumentary system consists of skin and its accessory organs. It protects the body and helps
in regulation of temperature and sensation.

Functions:
1. Protection
2. Excretion
3. Regulation of body temperature
4. Sensation
5. Vitamin D synthesis

Layers of Skin:
1. Epidermis
2. Dermis
3. Hypodermis

Epidermis:
• Made of stratified squamous epithelium
• No blood vessels
• Layers: Stratum basale, spinosum, granulosum, corneum
• Melanocytes produce melanin

Dermis:
• Made of connective tissue
• Contains blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles
• Contains sebaceous and sweat glands

Hypodermis:
• Made of adipose tissue
• Stores fat and provides insulation
• Contains large blood vessels

Accessory Organs:
• Hair and hair follicles
• Sebaceous glands
• Sweat glands
• Nails

Important Points:
• Skin is the largest organ of the body
• Sweat helps in temperature control
• Sebum prevents drying of skin
