5.6 Adjusting Journal Entries


Selected account balances before adjustments for Thomas Auto Repair Service at December 31
of the current year are as follows:

Additional information at December 31 is as follows:


1. The supplies on hand at December 31 were 25% of the amount recorded.
2. Repair services rendered but still unbilled at December 31 was P2,350.
3. Equipment acquired and used on July 1 is depreciated over 5 years.
4. December 16 to 31 salary amounting to P4,750 was not yet paid.
5. Unearned income at December 31 amounted to P7,500.

5.7 Adjusting Journal Entries


At the end of the accounting period ending December 31 of the current year, the following selected
data were taken from the financial statements of Kristian Perez, a well-known architect.

In preparing the financial statements, the following information was omitted in making the
adjustments:
a. Depreciation of equipment that cost P120,000 bought on April 1 of the current year. It is
estimated to be useful for 10 years without salvage.
b. Unbilled architect fees earned at December 31 was P6,000.
c. Prepaid insurance for January to June the following year, P1,200.
d. Unpaid salaries at the end of the year, P3,600.
e. Unused supplies at the end of the year not taken up, P1,050.

5.8 Adjusting Journal Entries
Below is a set of related information from the accounts of Nikko Services as of December 31,
2021, the close of its accounting period.
a. The machinery account has a balance of P 75,000. Part of this amount consists of machinery
acquired on October 1, 2021 at a cost of P 26,000. Machinery has been depreciated at a rate of
8% per year.
b. Rent of P 6,600 for one year in advance was paid on October 31, 2021, the debit at that time
being made to the expense account.
c. The balance in the supplies account on December 31, 2021 was P 7,200 the same balance as
at December 31, 2020 after adjustment. Additional supplies costing P 3,500 were purchased
during 2021 and charge to supplies expense. An inventory of supplies taken on December 31,
2021, showed the amount on hand to be P 4,500.
d. The allowance for doubtful accounts has a credit balance of P 300. It is estimated that 3% of
the P 19,700 of accounts receivable outstanding on December 31, 2021 will be uncollectible.
e. A five-year insurance premium of P 10,000 was paid on May 31, 2020 for coverage effective
on that date. The entire amount was debited to the unexpired insurance account.
