AutoCAD Layers Command - Complete Guide

1. What is a Layer?
A layer is like a transparent sheet where you draw objects. It helps organize the drawing, control
visibility, color, line type, and printing.

2. Command
Type LA or LAYER in the command line → Press Enter.

3. Sub-Commands / Options
New Layer Create a new layer

Delete Layer Remove a layer (if empty, not current, not 0/Defpoints)

Set Current Layer Make that layer active

Freeze/Thaw Hide objects completely / make visible again

On/Off Switch visibility of layer (still loaded if off)

Lock/Unlock Protect from editing but keep visible

Color Set color for objects in that layer

Linetype Choose line style (dashed, dotted, etc.)

Lineweight Thickness of line in plotting

Transparency Set layer transparency

Plot/No Plot Control if layer appears in print

Description Add notes about the layer

4. Important Points
• Layer 0: Default layer, cannot be deleted.
• Defpoints Layer: Created with dimensions, does not plot.
• Unlimited layers can be created.
• Different layers should be used for different objects (walls, doors, text, dimensions, etc.).
• Good layer management = professional drawing.
