Statement of Purpose

Application for MSc Drug Discovery, Design and Synthesis (September 2026)

My decision to pursue the MSc in Drug Discovery, Design and Synthesis is driven by a

strong academic foundation in chemistry, extensive professional experience in chemical

processing, and a clear ambition to contribute to the development of effective and sustainable

pharmaceutical solutions. I am particularly motivated to undertake this programme at the

University of Sussex due to its strong emphasis on medicinal chemistry, molecular design,

synthesis, and research-led teaching.

I hold a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Chemistry from Dedan Kimathi University of

Technology, where I developed a solid grounding in organic chemistry, analytical techniques,

chemical reactions, and laboratory practice. My undergraduate training fostered a deep interest in

the application of chemistry to real-world problems, particularly in the design, purification, and

optimisation of bioactive compounds. This interest has since matured through my professional

experience in the chemical industry.

Currently, I serve as a Chemical Processing and Extraction Manager at the Pyrethrum

Processing Company of Kenya. In this role, I oversee solvent extraction and refining processes

involving biologically active compounds, ensuring consistency, purity, and compliance with

quality and safety standards. My work requires a strong understanding of reaction pathways,

separation techniques, process optimisation, and quality control—competencies that are directly

relevant to drug discovery and synthesis. I am also involved in supporting research and

development initiatives aimed at improving extraction efficiency and product performance,

which has further strengthened my interest in applied chemical research.

The MSc in Drug Discovery, Design and Synthesis aligns perfectly with my academic

and professional goals. I am particularly drawn to the programme’s focus on medicinal

chemistry, small-molecule synthesis, drug design strategies, and the translation of chemical

principles into therapeutic applications. The opportunity to develop advanced skills in compound

design, structure–activity relationships, and modern synthesis techniques will equip me with the

expertise required to transition into pharmaceutical research and development roles.

Upon completion of the programme, I intend to pursue a career in drug development,

pharmaceutical research, or related chemical industries, with a long-term goal of contributing to

healthcare innovation in developing and emerging economies. I am confident that the University

of Sussex’s rigorous academic environment, strong research culture, and emphasis on practical

application will enable me to achieve these objectives.

I bring to this programme strong motivation, professional maturity, and a disciplined

scientific approach shaped by years of hands-on chemical practice. I am eager to contribute

meaningfully to the academic community at Sussex while developing the advanced knowledge

and research skills necessary for success in drug discovery and design.

Yours Faithfully
