LEVEL 1
I. Choose the correct answer:
1. James took some iron paper clips in a plate and hung four different magnets as
shown below. The magnets attracted different
numbers of clips.
a. Magnet 1 is probably the strongest.
b. Magnet 4 is probably the strongest.
c. Magnets 1 and 4 are equally strong.
d. All four magnets are equally strong.
2. What will happen when three bar magnets are hung in the manner as
shown below?
a. Magnet Y will turn around.
b. Magnet Y will move towards magnet Z.
c. Magnet Y will move towards magnet X.
d. None of these
3. A few clips are placed in a container and a magnet attracts the clips from outside the
container (as shown in the figure).
Which of the following can we say for sure?
a. The container is made of magnetic material.
b. The pins are made of non-magnetic material.
c. The pins are made of magnetic material.
d. We cannot say anything for sure based on this information.
4. If two horseshoe magnets are to be stored for a month, which of the following
positions will best preserve the magnetism in the magnets?
a. b. c. d.
5. A steel ball was rolled at a uniform speed towards a very powerful magnet. Which of
the following will be observed about the speed of the ball as it goes closer to the
magnet?
1
a. The speed increases.
b. The speed decreases.
c. The speed remains the same throughout.
d. The speed will either increase or decrease depending on the surface.
III. Give one word for the following :
1. The property of a freely suspended magnet to always rest along the north-south
direction- directive property
2. A physical method used to convert a magnetic substance into a magnet- single touch
method
3. The materials which are not attracted towards a magnet- non-magnetic materials
LEVEL 2:
IV. Correct the following statements:
1. Iron filings mostly attract in the middle of a bar magnet when it is brought near
them.
Iron filings mostly attract at the poles of a bar magnet when it is brought near them.
2. The magnets that we find in pencil boxes and toys are natural magnets.
The magnets that we find in pencil boxes and toys are artificial magnets.
3. The casing of a magnetic compass is usually made of iron.
The casing of a magnetic compass is usually made of aluminium/brass/plastic.
V. Assertion and Reasoning:
1. Assertion (A): Maglev is a train that does not require wheels.
Reason (R): The Maglev train experiences very little friction.
a. Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
b. Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
c. A is true but R is false.
d. A is false but R is true.
2. Assertion (A): Iron is a non-magnetic substance.
Reason (R): Iron is attracted towards a magnet.
a. Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
b. Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
c. A is true but R is false.
d. A is false but R is true.
.
VI. Answer the following:
1. Two ring magnets X and Y are arranged as shown in the
figure below. It is observed that the magnet X does not move
down further. What could be the possible reason? Suggest a way
to bring the magnet X in contact with magnet Y, without
pushing either of the magnets.
Ans: Magnet X stays suspended because the like poles (North-North or South-South)
are facing each other, causing repulsion. To bring them together, flip one magnet so
that unlike poles (North-South) attract.
2. Ria bought three identical metal bars from the market. Out of these bars, two were
magnets and one was just a piece of iron. How will she identify which two amongst the
three could be magnets (without using any other material)?
Ans: Ria can identify the magnets by using their property of repulsion. Two magnets
will repel each other when like poles are brought near, while an iron bar will be
attracted by both poles of a magnet as it is a magnetic substance.
LEVEL 3:
VII. Choose the correct answer:
1. You know that unlike magnetic poles attract - the south pole of one
magnet is attracted to the north pole of another magnet within its
magnetic field.
A magnetic compass responds to the earth's magnetic field and comes
to rest in the North-South orientation with the North pole of the
compass pointing to the Earth's geographic North. What does this
imply?
a. The earth's magnetic South pole is near its geographic North pole.
b. The earth's magnetic North pole is near its geographic North pole.
c. The earth's magnetic poles are perpendicular to its geographic poles.
d. The earth's magnetic poles lie at the core of the earth, which is a mass of molten
iron.
a
2. The magnet is cut in the middle (along the dotted line) as shown in the below figure.
The end with the big black dot is the magnet's SOUTH pole.
There are four points marked on the magnet. Which of these is the correct arrangement
of poles once the magnet is cut?
P Q R S
a. North South North South
b. South North South North
c. North North South South
d. South South North North
VIII. Answer the following:
1. Meera has three rods (A, B and C) made from different metals. One rod
is a magnet; one is made of copper; and one is made of iron. Study the
table and complete the blanks.
Ans: Rod A is iron, Rod B is copper, Rod C is magnet
