Topic: Importance of Clean Water in Daily Life

Name:Nyabonda Will Jnr Tyler

Grade:7

Subject:Science and Tech

Stage 1: Problem identification

Problem Description

Many communities around the world experience severe

shortages of clean water, which can lead to a range of
serious health issues, including life-threatening diseases
such as diarrhoea and cholera. These illnesses, often
caused by contaminated water sources,
disproportionately affect vulnerable populations,
particularly in developing regions. For instance, in
many rural areas, families may have to rely on unsafe
water from rivers or unprotected wells, increasing their
risk of waterborne diseases. Furthermore, learners in
these communities often lack sufficient knowledge
about the critical importance of accessing and
consuming clean water. Educational initiatives that
focus on teaching the significance of hygiene and
sanitation can help empower individuals to understand
the vital role that clean water plays in maintaining
health and preventing disease outbreaks. By raising
awareness and providing resources, we can foster
healthier communities and reduce the prevalence of
these preventable illnesses.

Statement of Intent

The purpose of this project is to investigate the

importance of clean water and how it affects health and
the environment. Clean water is not merely a resource;
it is a fundamental necessity for life itself. For instance,
access to clean drinking water significantly reduces the
incidence of waterborne diseases, which can be
devastating to communities, particularly in developing
regions. Moreover, the presence of clean water is
crucial for maintaining healthy ecosystems, as it
supports biodiversity and the natural habitats of
countless species. In addition, the project will explore
the various ways in which pollution and contamination
can compromise water quality, leading to serious health
risks for individuals and entire populations.
Understanding these connections is vital for promoting
awareness and encouraging sustainable practices that
protect our water sources. Ultimately, this investigation
aims to shed light on the multifaceted relationship
between clean water, public health, and environmental
sustainability, highlighting the urgent need for action to
ensure that everyone has access to this essential
resource.

How the Problem Can Be Solved

The problem can be effectively addressed through a

multifaceted approach that includes education, the
implementation of advanced water purification
methods, and the responsible use of our precious water
resources. Education plays a crucial role, as it
empowers individuals and communities to understand
the importance of water conservation and the various
techniques available for water treatment. For instance,
teaching people about rainwater harvesting and its
benefits can significantly reduce dependency on
traditional water sources.
Additionally, employing modern water purification
methods, such as reverse osmosis and ultraviolet
disinfection, can ensure that communities have access
to clean drinking water, thereby preventing waterborne
diseases. Furthermore, promoting the responsible use of
water resources involves encouraging practices like
fixing leaks, using water-efficient appliances, and
adopting sustainable agricultural techniques that
minimize water waste. By combining these strategies,
we can create a more sustainable future where water is
managed wisely and equitably for all.

Stage 2:Investigation of related ideas

Literature Review
Books and school textbooks explain that clean water is
essential for various fundamental activities in our daily
lives, including drinking, cooking, washing, and
sanitation. For instance, when we prepare meals, the use
of clean water ensures that the food we consume is safe
and free from harmful contaminants. Additionally,
clean water is vital for personal hygiene, as it allows
individuals to wash their hands, bathe, and maintain a
healthy lifestyle. Conversely, dirty water can lead to
severe health issues, as it is often a breeding ground for
harmful bacteria and parasites. This can result in
illnesses such as cholera, dysentery, and other
waterborne diseases, which can have devastating effects
on communities, particularly in areas with limited
access to health care. Therefore, the importance of
ensuring access to clean water cannot be overstated, as
it is a cornerstone of public health and well-being.

Information Collection –

Questionnaires
A questionnaire was given to 10 community members
asking:

Where do you get water?

Do you treat your water before drinking?

Analysis
Most people do not treat water, which increases the risk
of diseases. This lack of water treatment can lead to
serious health issues, as untreated water often contains
harmful bacteria, viruses, and parasites. For instance, in
many developing countries, individuals who consume
contaminated water are at a heightened risk of
contracting diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and
typhoid fever. Additionally, even in more developed
regions, neglecting to purify water can pose risks,
especially when natural disasters disrupt water supply
systems. Furthermore, the presence of pollutants and
chemicals in untreated water can lead to long-term
health complications, highlighting the critical
importance of implementing proper water treatment
practices. Ultimately, by failing to address the need for
water purification, communities unknowingly
jeopardize public health and well-being, making it
essential to prioritize this issue.

Stage 3: Generation of ideas

Ideas included boiling water to kill harmful pathogens,

using various types of water filters to remove impurities
and contaminants, and protecting water sources from
pollution to ensure clean and safe drinking water for
communities.
For instance, boiling water is a simple yet effective
method that can eliminate bacteria and viruses that may
be present, making it a reliable practice in areas where
access to clean water is limited. Additionally,
employing water filters, such as activated carbon or
reverse osmosis systems, can significantly enhance the
quality of water by filtering out chemicals, heavy
metals, and other harmful substances. Furthermore,
protecting water sources from pollution is crucial; this
can be achieved through legislation and community
efforts aimed at reducing industrial runoff, preventing
littering, and promoting sustainable agricultural
practices. By implementing these strategies, we can
safeguard our water supply and ensure the health and
well-being of both people and the environment.

Stage 4: Development of related ideas

The best idea was boiling water because it is cheap and

effective. This method has been utilized for centuries in
various cultures around the world, showcasing its
simplicity and reliability. For instance, in many
households, boiling water is a common practice for
preparing tea or cooking pasta. Demonstrations were
done at school, where students were able to witness
firsthand how quickly water can reach its boiling point
on a stove. This not only emphasizes the efficiency of
this method but also serves as a practical lesson in basic
science, illustrating concepts such as temperature and
heat transfer. The students engaged with the process,
asking questions and observing the transformation of
water into steam, which further reinforced their
understanding of the topic.

Stage 5: Presentation of results

Boiled water reduces illness and improves health by

effectively eliminating harmful microorganisms and
pathogens that can cause a variety of diseases. For
instance, when water is boiled, it reaches temperatures
that kill bacteria, viruses, and parasites, making it safe
for consumption. This is particularly important in areas
where access to clean drinking water is limited, as
consuming contaminated water can lead to serious
health issues such as cholera and dysentery.
Furthermore, drinking boiled water can also aid in
digestion and enhance overall bodily functions. By
staying hydrated with clean, boiled water, individuals
are less likely to suffer from gastrointestinal ailments,
thereby promoting better health and well-being. In
summary, boiling water serves as a simple yet powerful
method to safeguard against illness and foster a
healthier lifestyle.

Stage 6: Evaluations and recommendations

Learnings from the Outcome of the Investigations

Through the comprehensive investigations conducted,
learners gained a profound understanding of the critical
importance of clean water in our daily lives. It became
evident that access to safe drinking water is not merely
a privilege but a fundamental necessity for sustaining
health and well-being. Communities, both urban and
rural, should always prioritize the treatment of water
before consumption to eliminate harmful contaminants
and pathogens that can lead to serious health issues. For
instance, in areas where waterborne diseases are
prevalent, simple practices such as boiling water, using
filtration systems, or employing chemical disinfectants
can significantly reduce the risk of illness. Moreover,
the discussions highlighted the need for educational
programs that inform community members about
effective water purification methods and the potential
dangers of untreated water. By fostering awareness and
encouraging proactive measures, we can collectively
ensure that everyone has access to safe drinking water,
ultimately enhancing the overall quality of life in our
communities.
