Ch 1: Number Systems

SYNOPSIS
• Rational Numbers: The numbers of the form p/q, where p and q are integers and q ≠ 0,
are known as rational numbers.
• Let x and y be two rational numbers such that x < y.
Then (x + y)/2 is a rational number lying between x and y.
• Terminating Decimal: Every fraction p/q can be expressed as a decimal. If the decimal
expression of p/q terminates, i.e., comes to an end, then the decimal so obtained is called
a terminating decimal.
• A fraction p/q is a terminating decimal only, when prime factors of q are 2 and 5 only.
• Repeating (OR Recurring) Decimals: A decimal in which a digit or a set of digits
repeats periodically, is called a repeating or a recurring decimal.
• Special characteristics of rational numbers:
• Every rational number is expressible either as a terminating decimal or as a repeating
decimal.
• Every terminating decimal is a rational number.
• Every repeating decimal is a rational number.
• Irrational number: A number which can neither be expressed as a terminating decimal
nor as a repeating decimal, is called an irrational number.
• Real numbers: A number whose square is non-negative, is called a real number.
• Every real number is either rational or irrational.
• Rationalising Factor: If the product of two irrational numbers is rational then each one
is called rationalising factor of the other.
• Laws of Radicals: Let a > 0 be a real number, and let p and q be rational numbers, then
we have:
(a) (ap × aq ) = a( p + q ) (c) (ap) q = apq
(b) ap / aq = a ( p – q ) (d) ap × bq = ( ab )p
