Chapter 1 – Introduction to Styles (Fully Explained)
In professional document design, consistency is very important. Manual formatting can
lead to inconsistencies and is time-consuming. LibreOffice Writer offers 'Styles' to solve
this issue. A Style is a named collection of formatting properties (font, size, alignment,
spacing, etc.) that can be applied to text or objects with a single click.
Advantages of Using Styles:
• Consistency: All headings, paragraphs, and tables look uniform.
• Efficiency: Change one style to update the whole document instantly.
• Professional look: Documents appear well-structured and easy to read.
• Automation: Enables automatic Table of Contents and document navigation.
Style Categories (Detailed):
• Page Style: Controls entire page layout. Includes paper size (A4, Legal), margins,
background color/image, header/footer placement. Example: 'First Page' style for title
page.
• Paragraph Style: Controls paragraph-specific properties – alignment (Left, Right,
Center, Justify), line spacing (single, 1.5, double), indentation, borders. Example:
'Heading 1' style.
• Character Style: Changes text appearance without affecting paragraph settings.
Useful for highlighting keywords, changing font face, color or adding emphasis
(italic/bold).
• Frame Style: Frames act as containers for images or text blocks. Frame styles define
size, position, border thickness, background color, and how text wraps around them.
• List Style: Allows customizing numbered/bulleted lists. You can change bullet shapes,
numbering format (Roman, Alphabet, Custom symbols).
• Table Style: Defines border thickness, row/column background colors, text alignment
within cells, and alternating row styles for better readability.
Applying Styles: Use F11 or the Styles Sidebar. Select text/object → Choose style
category → Double-click style to apply.
Creating & Updating Custom Styles:
• New Style from Selection: Format text → Open Styles → Click 'New Style from
Selection' → Name it → Save.
• Update Style: Modify formatted text → Select 'Update Selected Style' to apply changes
throughout document.
• Drag & Drop Method: Drag formatted text into Styles window to create new style
quickly.
Fill Format Mode: Allows applying the same style to multiple scattered elements quickly
by clicking on them one by one.
Chapter 2 – Working with Images (Fully Explained)
Images enhance the readability and visual appeal of documents. LibreOffice Writer
supports multiple image formats (JPG, PNG, BMP, GIF). Images can be embedded
(increasing file size) or linked (reduces file size, keeps image as external file).
Image Insertion Methods (Explained):
• Insert → Image: Opens a file browser to pick an image file. Image is inserted at cursor
position.
• Drag & Drop: Dragging image file from computer into document inserts it instantly.
• Copy & Paste: Copy image from another document or browser, then paste it in Writer.
• Linking: Inserts image reference instead of actual image. Good for multiple copies,
reduces document size.
Image Toolbar Tools:
• Crop: Remove unwanted parts of image.
• Flip Horizontal/Vertical: Mirror image.
• Rotate 90° or Free Rotate: Change image orientation.
• Transparency: Make image partially see-through.
• Color Adjustments: Change brightness, contrast, gamma, or modify RGB components.
• Filters: Apply special effects – Invert, Solarise, Posterise, Mosaic, Charcoal Sketch,
etc.
Drawing Tools: (View → Toolbars → Drawing)
Includes basic shapes (rectangles, circles), arrows, callouts, flowchart symbols. Objects
can be grouped, resized, aligned, rotated. Drawing Object Properties Toolbar allows
changing fill color, line style, thickness, etc.
Grouping & Resizing:
Grouping combines multiple objects so they move/resize together. Resizing using corner
handles keeps proportions, using side handles stretches only one dimension.
Positioning Images:
• Arrangement: Defines stacking order (Bring to Front, Send to Back).
• Anchoring: Fixes image relative to Page, Paragraph, Character or Frame so it moves
with them.
• Alignment: Places image horizontally (Left, Center, Right) or vertically (Top, Middle,
Bottom).
• Text Wrapping: Controls text flow (Wrap Off, Page Wrap, Optimal Wrap, Wrap
Left/Right, Wrap Through).
Chapter 3 – Advanced Features of Writer (Fully Explained)
Table of Contents (ToC):
A ToC lists headings and subheadings with page numbers. Steps: 1) Apply Heading
Styles (H1–H10). 2) Place cursor at start of document. 3) Insert → Table of Contents &
Index → Table of Contents. 4) Customize settings (show levels, tab leaders). 5) Right-click
→ Update Index when headings change.
Templates:
• Predefined format for documents (with styles, placeholders).
• Create template: Format a document → File → Templates → Save As Template.
• Apply template to new documents: File → New → Templates.
• Templates ensure consistent look across multiple documents.
Track Changes & Collaboration:
• Track Changes: Records edits by multiple users. Insertions shown underlined,
deletions shown strikethrough.
• Accept/Reject Changes: Author can approve or reject modifications.
• Comments: Reviewers can add notes for discussion.
• Compare Documents: Compares original and edited versions, showing differences.
