Understanding Normal Distribution Characteristics

The document explains skewness as a measure of the symmetry of a probability distribution, with specific formulas and interpretations for different levels of skewness. It describes types of distributions including positively and negatively skewed distributions, as well as normal distribution, which is symmetrical and bell-shaped. Additionally, it outlines the properties of the normal curve and compares normal distributions based on their means and standard deviations.

ILLUSTRATING A NORMAL RANDOM VARIABLE AND ITS CHARACTERISTICS

SKEWNESS
Skewness is the measure of the symmetry or asymmetry of a probability distribution.
Formula: SK = 3(Mean − Median) / Standard Deviation

Interpretation:
• Highly skewed: SK < −1 or SK > +1
• Moderately skewed: SK between −1 and −0.5 or +0.5 and +1
• Symmetrical: SK between −0.5 and +0.5

TYPES OF DISTRIBUTION
Positively Skewed (Right-Skewed): Mean > Median, longer right tail.
Negatively Skewed (Left-Skewed): Mean < Median, longer left tail.
Normal Distribution: Mean = Median = Mode.

NORMAL DISTRIBUTION
Also known as Gaussian Distribution.
It is symmetrical and bell-shaped where the mean, median, and mode coincide.

PROPERTIES OF THE NORMAL CURVE

1. Bell-shaped and unimodal
2. Symmetrical about the center
3. Mean = Median = Mode
4. Width determined by standard deviation
5. Tails extend infinitely
6. Total area under the curve equals 1

STANDARD NORMAL DISTRIBUTION

Mean = 0
Standard Deviation = 1

COMPARING NORMAL DISTRIBUTIONS

a. Different means, same standard deviation: same shape, different centers.
b. Same mean, different standard deviations: same center, different spreads.
c. Different means and different standard deviations: different centers and shapes.
