Rate of Dissolving: Temperature & Stirring Effects

The document outlines a practical task to investigate the rate of dissolving salt in water by examining the effects of temperature, stirring, and grain size. It includes steps for conducting experiments, recording results, drawing conclusions, and evaluating the investigations. Each part of the task requires formulating a hypothesis, planning the investigation, and analyzing the outcomes.

PRACTICAL TASK

Investigate, measure and draw graphs of rate of dissolving

Part 1: investigate the influence of temperature on the rate dissolving
1. Write down the Hypothesis
What do you think will happen when a teaspoon of salt is added to each jar? (2)
2. Plant and conduct your investigation
Materials Needed
 2 beakers or jars;
 Hot and cold water
 Salt
 Measuring spoons
 A watch

a. What are we trying to find out? (1)

b. Make a list of the factors which are the same for 2 jars (4)
c. What be different in the same jars? (2)
d. How will you conduct the investigation? Write a list of things to do. Use the photograph to
help you. How will you use the watch? (6)
e. Observe the salt crystals in each beaker. Measure the time they take to dissolve. In
which beaker did they dissolve the fastest? (2)

3. Record your results

a. Use a table like one below to record your results. add a heading for your table. (3)

Temperature of water Cold Hot

Time taken to dissolve (s)

b. Draw a bar graph using the information in your table. Add a heading for your bar graph.

4. Draw conclusions.
Write two sentences to explain your findings
5. Evaluate your investigation.
a. Was your hypothesis right or wrong? (1)
b. Is there something you could do to get better results? Give a reason for your answer. (2)

Part 2: investigate the influence of stirring the mixture on the rate of dissolving
1. Write down a hypothesis.
What do you think will happen when a teaspoon of salt is added to each jar, and you stir
one of the mixtures?
2. Plan and conduct your investigation.
Material needed:
 2 beakers or jars
 125 ml cold tap water each
 Measuring spoons
 Ice cream stick for stirring
 Watch to read time taken

Part 3: investigate the influence of Grain size on the rate of dissolving
1. Write down a suitable hypothesis for this investigation. (1)
2. Plan and conduct your investigation.
Look at the photograph below and answer the questions that follow.

a. Make a list of material and equipment you need to do this investigation. (4)
b. Identify the factors you are going to change in this investigation. (1)
c. List all the factors that you are going to control by keeping them the same. (3)
d. Write down the method you can follow to conduct pa fair test. (6)
3. Record your results.
Use a table the same as in part 1 and 2 to record your results.
Remember to give your table a heading and change it to reflect the factor you are
testing.
Draw a bar graph using your results. Add a heading for your bar graph. (5)

4. Draw conclusions
What conclusion can you draw from results? Explain your conclusions. (2)

5. Evaluate your investigation

a. Was your hypothesis right or wrong? (1)
b. Is there something you could do to get better results? Give a reason for your answer. (2)
