Safety effectiveness
User Experience Integration and
and Accessibility Why ????? Compatibility
Ease of
manufacturing and Sustainability
maintenance
Standards &
Compliance
It ensures that a product, system, or process performs efficiently,
safely, and sustainably while meeting user needs and regulatory
requirements.
What is Design ????
A systematic process of developing components or systems to
perform a mechanical function
Design is to formulate a plan to satisfy a particular need and to
create something with a physical reality
What it does - Ensure functionality, reliability, safety, and
manufacturability
Example: Shaft design
Types of Design
• Adaptive Design: Modifying existing designs
Shaft material change
• Developmental Design: Improving existing designs
Increase efficiency of gear
• New Design: Creating completely new concepts
New robotic arm
Types of Design
• Rational Design: Based on theory and analysis
Stress-strain analysis
• Empirical Design: Based on past experience
Trial-and-error fit testing
• Industrial Design: Emphasis on ergonomics and aesthetics.
• System Design: Integration of multiple components.
Gearbox and transmission system

Problem Identification / Need Recognition
•Understand the need or problem that the design must solve.
•Define objectives, constraints, and functions.
•Research and Information Gathering
•Study existing solutions, materials, standards, patents, and user requirements.
•Consider technical, economic, and environmental factors.
•Concept Generation (Preliminary Design)
•Brainstorm multiple design concepts or alternatives.
•Sketch or model different approaches.
•Concept Evaluation and Selection
•Compare concepts based on feasibility, cost, performance, and risk.
•Select the most promising design using tools like decision matrices.
•Detailed Design and Analysis
•Create detailed drawings, CAD models, and
specifications.
•Perform engineering analysis (e.g., stress, thermal,
kinematic).
•Prototyping and Development
•Build a prototype or working model.
•Test physical design for functionality and manufacturability.
•Testing and Evaluation
•Conduct performance tests under real or simulated conditions.
•Collect data to compare with design requirements.
•Iteration and Refinement
•Make improvements based on test results.
•Repeat design steps as needed (cycle).
• Final Design and Documentation
• Finalize all technical documentation, drawings, bill of materials (BOM).
• Prepare for production or manufacturing.
• Production / Implementation
• Begin manufacturing or construction using the final design.
• Ensure quality control.
• Feedback and Redesign (if needed)
• Monitor performance in real-world use.
• Gather user feedback and initiate redesign if needed.

Design a knuckle joint to transmit a tensile force of 30 kN. The joint is made of
mild steel with an allowable tensile stress of 75 MPa, shear stress of 60 MPa,
and crushing stress of 120 MPa.
