IELTS WRITING TASK 1: MAP & PROCESS PRACTICE

Sample 1: The diagrams below give information about two road tunnels
in two Australian cities.

The given maps depict two different underground tunnel systems for cars in two
Australian cities.

What stands out is that there are a range of variations between the two tunnel
systems, in terms of the cost, size, length, time of construction, and the
surrounding environment. The first tunnel cost approximately half as much as the
second tunnel to construct, however, the first tunnel was significantly smaller in
terms of length and vehicle capacity. The first tunnel also took much longer to
construct.

In more detail, the first tunnel, which took twelve years to construct between 1986
and 1998, cost $555 million, and was built underneath a body of water and sand.
Meanwhile, the second tunnel only took four years for completion but cost twice as
much, at $1.1 billion, and was constructed beneath a layer of stone and clay.

Additionally, the size of the tunnels was also substantially different, with the first
tunnel being 1.5 meters high and 2.2km long, and the second tunnel being 2.5m
high and 3.6 km long. The first tunnel system is four lanes wide, while the second
tunnel system is six lanes wide.

Sample 2: The picture below shows the recycling process of wasted

glass bottles.

The given diagram depicts a breakdown of how used glass bottles are recycled.

What stands out is that there are three main stages in this process, commencing
with the collection of used bottles, and culminating with newly recycled bottles used
for storing drinks to be sold in supermarkets.

At the first stage of the process, glass bottles are used by customers and gathered
at a collection point before being delivered to a cleaning plant by a truck. The
second stage begins when the bottles are washed with high-pressure water, and
subsequently sorted based on their colour (green, brown and clear). After that, the
bottles are broken down into pieces in a glass factory and melted in a furnace to
form a liquid. The recycled liquid glass is then mixed with new liquid glass and
poured into a mould to form new glass bottles. During the final stage of the process,
the recycled bottles are filled and packaged, and then transported to supermarkets
to be sold.

Sample 3: The maps show how the industrial area will change into a
housing area in the future.

The given table depicts certain forecasted alternations in an industrial site, which
will be transformed into residential areas in the future.

What stands out is that the most noticeable changes will be the addition of various
buildings to the North and East of the spot; also the modification of names of
specific areas and their facilities will be recorded.

Regarding the East side of this place, the factory is predicted to be replaced by
apartments, which will be located next to the newly-added parking area. While the
current Entrance and Reception are placed to the North, the plan proposes its
substitution by residential areas including 6 bedroom houses which will be
accessed through communal gardens.

Significant changes will also be projected on the remaining sides of this site. The
3 bedrooms house and 4 bedroom house will replace the packing and storage
areas in the Western part. Additionally, the substitution of offices and canteen for
parking garages is also suggested in this [Link] only feature that is predicted to
remain its original position is the main road which surrounds the whole area.

Sample 4: The plan below shows the village of Pebbleton 20 years ago
and now.

The given map depicts changes made in Pebbleton over the period of 20 years.

What stands out is that the most noticeable change was the addition of houses
and other facilities such as footbridge, tennis court, community center as well as
the replacement of old fort with a children’s playground.

Specifically, on the western side of the city, while the lighthouse has not changed
its initial position for 20 years, the substitution of the old fort with a children’s
playground and the film studio with flats has been recorded. At present, a
footbridge has been built to connect the coast road to the old fort road, which
greatly assisted students of the school in the south to cross the river. There was a
footpath at the end of the footbridge and a tennis court was added in the middle of
the footpath and the lighthouse land.

Towards the north of the map, the number of houses increased and the city had a
new community center located near the residential area. Regarding the eastern
side, almost every feature such as the old fort road, the playing field and the
roadbridge remained unchanged.

Sample 5: The diagrams below show changes that have taken place in
the Sawry District neighbourhood since 1920.
IELTS WRITING TASK 1: MAP & PROCESS PRACTICE

This pair of maps depicts change over the course of a century in the Sawry District
neighborhood by showing the area in 1920 and 2020.

The overall change in the neighborhood is one of growth. By 2020 there are more
businesses, more housing, and greater public services. However, not all
businesses and services remained intact after 1920.

Business and housing saw the most change and growth. The cannery present in
1920 was replaced by an office complex. Two of the houses near the Elmwood
River were demolished and replaced by a road and an apartment complex. Oak
Avenue went from having two houses and a shop to having three houses, two
shops, an apartment complex, and a petrol station.

The change in public services was less significant than the change in housing and
businesses. Prestwich Primary School was demolished and then rebuilt as a
bigger school, closer to Oak Street’s shops. And Elmwood River gained a bridge
and a bike path, the latter of which replaced the small beach seen on the 1920
map.

Sample 6: The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in
2007 and in 2010.

The maps depict the changes of road access to a particular city hospital between
2007 and 2010.

What stands out is that transport facilities in the area had been renovated to
provide easy access to the hospital by both private and public vehicles.

The road network remained unchanged over the period in question, with two
access roads to the hospital, one built around the hospital building itself (Ring
Road), and the other located to the south named Hospital Road.

In 2007, a car park for both the staff and the public was sited at the corner of City
Road and Hospital Road, to the south-east of the hospital. By 2010, it had become
accessible for the staff only, while a new public car park was constructed to the
eastern side, adjacent to Ring Road. Another striking change was the erection of
two roundabouts at the intersections of Hospital Road with Ring Road and City
Road to improve the traffic flow there. A final transformation was the conversion of
six bus stops along either side of Hospital Road into a large bus stop situated to
the south-west of the hospital, with two exits to the two roundabouts.

Sample 7: The maps below show the changes in the art gallery ground
floor in 2005 and the present day.

The maps depict some changes taking place to the layout of an art gallery’s ground
floor between 2005 and the present day.
What stands out is that while the eastern part of the gallery has remained more or
less intact over time, the opposite side has undergone significant transformations,
with the whole area becoming more accessible for the disabled.
Originally, the gallery was designed merely for its exhibition purpose and visitors
could enter the hall through the entrance in the south of the building. Inside the
hall, there was a reception desk to welcome visitors, which led to a staircase in the
north end. The remaining part simply consisted of functional areas with a set of 3
exhibition rooms on the eastern wing, one large exhibition space together with an
office taking up the entire southwestern corner, and a café in the northwest.
At present, the location has become modernized and versatile, providing more
facilities for visitors, especially with the addition of a wheelchair slope right outside
the entrance to the west and a lift next to the stairs. To the west, exhibition room 4
was converted into a children’s indoor playground and one smaller room for
temporary display, while a gallery shop and a vending machine were opened in
place of the original gallery office and the cafe. The final alteration that happened
was the relocation of the reception towards the entrance of the gallery.
Sample 8: The plans below show the site of an airport now and how it
will look after redevelopment last year.
IELTS WRITING TASK 1: MAP & PROCESS PRACTICE

The plans depict the proposed changes to the SouthWest Airport next year.

What stands out is that the airport will be experiencing striking transformations,
with more facilities in the buildings and roughly twice as many boarding gates.

At present, there are two terminals at the airport, one for departures and the other
for arrivals, each with only one entrance in the South. The future plan proposes
that there will be a new entrance added next to each existing one. Inside the
departure concourse, the cafe in the Northeastern corner will have been relocated
to the Southwestern corner. The check-in desk in the Western side will also be
moved to the opposite wall, making way for a bag-drop section. There is not any
facility in the arrivals concourse now, but a cafe, an ATM and a car-hire service
are expected to be set up along the Eartern side. While the passport control and
security checkpoint in the departure terminal will remain unchanged, new shops
are likely to be opened in the departure lounge next year.

Currently, there are eight boarding gates which can be accessed through
walkways, but it is planned that these will have been transformed into eighteen
ones, standing in a fan-shaped area. A final development will be the replacement
of the two walkways by sky trains, providing more convenience for passengers.

Sample 9: The maps below show changes in the Spanish city of

Castellon in recent times.
IELTS WRITING TASK 1: MAP & PROCESS PRACTICE

The two maps depict the main changes which have taken place in the town of
Castellion between the year 2000 and today.
What stands out is that Castellion has undergone a major modernization, with
heavy investment in shopping and transport facilities.
The North of the city has become more built-up, experiencing substantial reduction
in open space. One remarkable change is that a new tram line has been built to
connect the university with the town centre. Meanwhile, the train station has been
relocated eastwards, making way for a police station. In 2000, there was not any
accommodation for students, but a hall of residence has been built near the
university. The Northeastern corner of the city used to be a green area, with a lot
of trees, but they have been cut down, and a new shopping complex has been
constructed. A new airport, which is located next to the tram line, has also been
under construction.
There has also been a complete change to the South of the city. A striking
transformation is that the old market in the West of the city has been knocked down
to make way for new shops. A completely new covered market has also been
opened on the other side of the town. If we look at the port area, it has been
pedestrianized since 2000, and a range of entertainment facilities have been built,
namely cinemas, bars and clubs. A final development has been the introduction of
a bike-rental scheme in the city centre.

Sample 10:
IELTS WRITING TASK 1: MAP & PROCESS PRACTICE

The floorplan depicts how a building has changed from 1958 to the present day.

Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the building has
served both commercial and residential purposes with the only area remaining
unchanged being the kitchen. At present, the flower shop has a more open layout
relative to when it was an apartment and office.

In 1958, the building was used as an office with a meeting room in the top left
corner of the floorplan, an assistant’s and secretary’s office below there and a toilet
in the bottom left corner. In 1985, the meeting room was extended and turned into
a living room and a large bathroom and shower took the place of the offices and
toilet. The florist shop contained a gift card room in the top left, above a large open
space for flowers and a play area in the bottom left corner.

On the right side, the kitchen in the top corner was unaltered across all iterations
of the ground floor. In comparison, there was a manager’s office on the right hand
side and a reception area in the bottom corner. These spaces were allocated for
bedrooms in the apartment and are now an office and additional space for flowers.

Sample 11: This is an IELTS writing task 1 sample answer essay on the
topic of park in 1980 and now.
IELTS WRITING TASK 1: MAP & PROCESS PRACTICE

The map details alterations to a park in 1980 and the present day.

Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the park has
become more developed for visitors with additional recreational space for outdoor
eating, seating, and playing. The only subtraction relates to the flowers.

In 1980, there was an entrance on the left side above a pond surrounded by 3
benches and a second gate at the bottom of the park. Now, both gates have
disappeared, the road is less straight and the pond has more benches around it.
There are also two additional roads coming from the top and right of the diagram,
sectioning off an area with trees, chairs, desks, and barbecue options (previously
only containing trees).

In the bottom right corner of the map, a flowerbed has been replaced by a
playground. A second space for flowers in the bottom left below the pond has also
been removed in favor of wild bush.

Sample 12: The maps below shows university sports courts in 1990 and
now.
IELTS WRITING TASK 1: MAP & PROCESS PRACTICE

The maps depict how a university sports courts area has changed from 1990 to
the present day.

Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the number of total
courts for tennis and basketball has increased at the expense of parking and a
park, while a formal building with a gym now houses various exercise facilities.
These changes allow for more varied activity.

In 1990, on the left side of the map was a park with trees and grass as well as a
car park. Today, the park has been replaced by a large basketball court and the
car park by 4 tennis courts.

On the right side of the map, a structure to contain the various athletic facilities has
been erected with only the indoor pool and reception area in the same position in
the new building. The changing room beneath the reception area and pool has
been lengthened and moved slightly to the right so as to line up directly above a
new, large fitness centre. The fitness centre has replaced two tennis courts, now
outside the main building.

Sample 13: The maps below show a science park in 2008 and the same
park today.
IELTS WRITING TASK 1: MAP & PROCESS PRACTICE

The maps detail alterations to a science park dating back to 2008.

Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the park has
expanded to include more areas for research, education and improved
accessibility.

Considering initially the northern end of the park, in 2008 there was considerable
untouched natural land that has now been replaced with a research and
development center (the reception area was also removed in favor of a university
hub, while the adjacent offices remain the same). South of these new facilities, the
car park has reduced in size, the business units are unchanged, and, most
significantly, the cyber security building has been enlarged, overtaking previously
undeveloped land.

In the southern section of the park, the circular IT centre has been transformed
into an innovation centre and there is a new train station on the southernmost
tracks with walkways branching off to various facilities. Finally, there are additional
biking routes along an eastern road and running through the centre of the park
past the car park and new buildings as well as a bus stop on the eastern side of
campus.

Sample 14: The plans below show the layout of a university’s sports
centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment
IELTS WRITING TASK 1: MAP & PROCESS PRACTICE

.
The diagrams detail the present construction of a sports centre and plans for its
renovation. Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that there
are plans to remove the outdoor courts and expand the gym with additional
facilities for swimming, changing, dancing, and activities largely unrelated to
exercise like shopping and having coffee.

At the moment, the university’s main building is flanked by large outdoor courts.
The plan is to remove the western courts in favour of a leisure pool larger in size
than the current pool, which will itself remain unchanged during renovations. The
entire main building will not undergo alterations including the changing rooms,
reception and seating area. The only slight exception is that the gym on the
northern end of the building will be lengthened eastwards and connect with two
new adjoining dance studios.

The outdoor court on the eastern side will be replaced by a sports hall and to the
southeast of the sports hall the university will add an additional changing room
(which is mirrored by the same room in the southwestern corner of the plans) and
an abutting cafe to the west. The large entrance area will not be impeded in any
way but a new sports shop will open next to the westernmost changing room.

Sample 15: The plans below show a public park when it first opened in
1920 and the samepark today.
IELTS WRITING TASK 1: MAP & PROCESS PRACTICE

The maps detail the changes since 1920 to today of Grand Park.

Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the park added
and expanded areas mainly related to entertainment including a larger stage
and various areas for recreation. There was also significant relocation in
terms of seating and the only areas that remained the same were the
entrances and one minor garden.

The most striking change is in the center of the park where the fountain has
been removed in favour of a rose garden with full seating around it. To the
left of the new garden, the previous stage for musicians has been turned into
a much larger ampitheatre facing the opposite direction that will allow for
concerts in the park. This change has necessitated the removal of both
seating on the far left side as well as the rose garden in the bottom left corner
of the map.

The entrances at the top and bottom in the middle have remained unchanged
but on the right side a cafe has replaced the rose garden and where there
was a pond for water plants in the top right corner, there is now a children’s
play area. Instead of the pond, a water feature has been built occupying the
bottom right corner (replacing a glasshouse and some seats). Finally,
leading to the water park is a new entrance for an underground car park.

Sample 16: The maps below show Pancha Village in 2005 and 2015.
IELTS WRITING TASK 1: MAP & PROCESS PRACTICE

The maps detail changes to the village of Pancha from 2005 to 2015. Looking
from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the town became more
developed with the addition of a new road, modern utilities, and general
expansion of current residential, commercial and educational areas.

By 2015, the single dirt road present in 2005 had been transformed into a
highway lined with road signs, telephone poles and telecommunication
towers in the bottom left corner of the map. On the left side of the road, the
marketplace has grown and become more organized while the sizes of the
homes along the road have also become larger.

To the right side of the road, in the bottom corner, the area demarcated for
pagodas now allows for an additional building. Just above the pagodas, two
homes have been cleared away and in the upper right corner, the town built
a secondary school to complement the primary school.

It is also worth noting that in 2005, most homes only possessed access to
telephones but by 2015 satellite service had become common.
Sample 17: This is an IELTS writing task 1 sample answer essay about
a process/diagram on the topic of how to pu’erh tea is made.
IELTS WRITING TASK 1: MAP & PROCESS PRACTICE

The diagram featured above details the steps by which pu’erh raw and ripened tea
are produced.

Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that there are 3 main
stages beginning with initial deactivation and drying, followed by either aging or
fermentation and finally storage in the case of the raw tea and compression for the
ripe tea.

The process for both varieties of tea commences when the leaves are fried in pans
in order to deactivate specific enzymes. This is followed by rolling of the fried
leaves and drying in the sun. In the next stage, the two kinds of tea are treated in
different ways.

For the ripe tea, the loose raw tea is fermented with mold and then compressed to
form the final product. In terms of the raw tea, the leaves are first compressed.
Subsequent to this step, the tea is aged, rather than fermented, and the pu’erh raw
tea is then available for use.
Sample 18: The diagram details the process of producing olive oil.
IELTS WRITING TASK 1: MAP & PROCESS PRACTICE

The diagram delineates the process by which olive oil is made.

What stands out is that the production can be divided into three main groups
beginning with initial harvesting and treatment, followed by creation of the oil, and
lastly storage for future use.

The process begins with the olives being harvested from trees and placed in a
collection vat. The olives must then be de-leafed and cleaned with water before
they are put into an olive mill to crush them into olive paste. The paste is then put
through a malaxer set to a temperature not greater than 27 °C. After the malaxer,
paste then enters a centrifugal press which creates virgin oils.

Subsequent to this, the virgin oils are then either separated (with waste water being
discharged) or decanted, which filters out both solids and water. Regardless of the
method of separation, both products are reserved in a storage tank to finish the
steps detailed in the diagram.
