How to Do DELTA Module One – Task 1

This guide explains what Task 1 is, what examiners want, and how to answer it step by step in a clear
and exam-focused way. Task 1 is about testing your knowledge of language systems and features and
your ability to define, exemplify, and explain them.

1. What is Task 1?
In Task 1, you are given a short text and several underlined or highlighted items (for example:
grammar, lexis, phonology, or discourse features). You must usually do three things for each item: (1)
Identify or name it, (2) Explain its meaning or use, (3) Give an example or explain why it is used in the
text.

2. What Examiners Want

• Accurate terminology (correct technical names).

• Clear and precise definitions (not vague or simple).

• Correct examples or explanations.

• Answers that are brief, clear, and to the point.

• No unnecessary long explanations.

3. How to Structure Each Answer

A good DELTA Task 1 answer usually follows this simple structure: Name it → Define/Explain it → Give
an example or explain its function in the text. Write in short, clear sentences or bullet points.

4. Simple Example
If the item is: “had been working” You could write: • Form: past perfect continuous • Use: to show an
action that started before a past time and continued up to that time • Example: “She had been working
there for five years before she moved.”

5. Time Management
You should not spend too long on Task 1. Aim to answer clearly and move on. Write only what is
needed to get the marks.

6. Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Using wrong or vague terminology.

• Giving examples without explanations.

• Writing too much and wasting time.

• Writing simple CELTA-level explanations instead of precise DELTA-level ones.

7. Final Tips
Memorize key terminology, practice defining language items, and always answer in a clear,
exam-focused way. Practice with past papers and check model answers.
