Thevenin and Norton Circuit Analysis

The experiment aims to obtain Thevenin’s and Norton’s equivalent circuits of a resistive network using Matlab software. It involves applying both theorems to a given circuit, measuring short circuit current and open circuit voltage, and verifying results through simulation. The experiment successfully demonstrates the implementation of these network theorems in a purely resistive network.

Experiment - 2

Date: 17/02/2024

Objective: To obtain the Thevenin’s and Norton’s equivalent circuit of a

resistive network.

Apparatus Required:

S. No. Apparatus Quantity Speci ication

Desktop H.P. Personal

1 1
Computer Computer

2 Matlab Software 1 R2019b

3 Power Supply 1 230 V, 50 Hz

Theory: A set of linear circuit principles which provide quick and simple
solutions of the circuit problems are generally called as Network Theorems.
The two network theorems that we discuss in this experiment are Thevenin
and Norton Theorem.
1. Thevenin’s Theorem: Any two terminal linear network containing energy
sources and impedances can be replaced with an equivalent circuit
consisting of a voltage source E’ in series with impedance Z’. The value of
E’ is the open circuit voltage between the terminals of the network and Z’
is the equivalent impedance measured between the terminals of the
network with all energy sources deactivated.

2. Norton’s Theorem: Any two terminal linear network containing energy

sources and impedances can be replaced by an equivalent circuit
consisting of a current source I’ in parallel with an admittance Y’. The
value of I’ is the short circuit current between the terminal of network and
Y’ is the admittance measured between the terminal with all energy
sources deactivated.

For Group-1, the various values of the variables of the above circuit are:

V = 100 V, R1 = 50 Ω, R2 = 60 Ω, R3 = 30 Ω, and R4 = 40 Ω (Load Resistance).

Procedure:
1. Apply the Thevenin’s Theorem and Norton’s Theorem on the circuit
diagram (Figure 1) and ind the short circuit current and open circuit
voltage across the load resistance.
2. Form the same circuit on the Simulink and run it.
3. Verify the result from both methods.

Result: We have successfully implemented the equivalent circuit of

Thevenin’s Theorem and Norton’s Theorem of a purely resistive network on
Matlab (Simulink).

Precautions:
1. Connections must be properly alone.
2. Don’t forget to drag powergui beside circuit diagram.
