INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

For the past few years, the prices of chicken feeds have been increasing day by day due to

inflation which causes many people to rapidly lose money from spending on chicken feed

because of the pandemic during 2020-2023 it has become harder to buy a kilo of chicken feeds

because of the increase in prices so the researchers will make an alternative chicken feeds that

the consumer can use to feed the chickens with a low budget using potato peels that contains

many nutrients so the chicken can gain weight.

Chickens need good bones to lay and fertilize eggs and grow up, suitable enough for meat. They

need nutrients such as iron, potassium, copper, and calcium to have the bone density and

structure required for health, and egg production and potato peels contain these nutrients

This study may help ordinary or small-scale poultry owners by having a lower budget for their

poultry feeds due to inflation and at the same time those who are following a healthy lifestyle

and are conscious of consuming poultry products raised from organic methods. The same is true

with those big-scale poultry owners, this study can help them to cut out budgets on feeds for their
chicken and to make more affordable chicken feeds because the material is widely available

compared to buying commercial chicken feeds

The researchers are motivated to learn and analyze more about potato peel to use it as an

alternative feed for chickens. Potato peels are mostly thrown away after peeling potatoes.

Instead, the researchers will use it as an Chicken feeds, which can be cheaper and better than the

other chicken feeds. Chickens can eat potato peels as long as they don't contain any green

pigment. The green pigment contains a chemical that's toxic to chickens Both red and white

potatoes can contain this chemical, but sweet potatoes do not/While most chickens love potato

peels, there is a risk when feeding them Many other table scraps are safe to feed chickens and

don't pose a risk to their health.

Statement of the problem

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of potato peels as an alternative feed for chicken

There is significant between the alternative chicken feeds which is the potato peel and

commercial chicken feeds.

Objectives

The objective of the researchers is to determine the effectiveness of the potato peel as an

alternative feed for chickens.

Significance of the study

This study aims to determine the potential of potato peels as chicken feed

On increasing the weights of poultry chicks. This is essential in solving economic issues as the

price of chicken feeds has been rising rapidly. It can also help reduce the disposal of potato peels

as it can be used as an organic chicken feed it may also help agricultural factories in finding new

use for potato peels.

Agriculture on decreasing the prices of chicken feed in compliance with the laws that govern the

poultry products in our nation.

Economically, the study will provide an alternative yet effective way of augmenting the weight

of poultry chicks. It will also aid in controlling the price of chicken feeds which can help the

profit of local farmers.

Scope and delimitation

This study focuses to the effectiveness of potato peels as an alternative chicken feeds for the

weight of the chicken. The researcher will conduct this study to know if potato peels can be a

alternative feeds for chicken. This study will last at least 45 days in Lower Cabatangan,

Zamboanga city, Philippines.

The delimitation is that we will use potato (solanum toberosum) peels/skin as an alternative

chicken feed. The researcher will conduct this research in Lower Cbatangan, Zamboanga city,

and will conduct this research in 30 days (limit is 45 days), and we used poultry chicken for the

experiment.

Methodology

Research locale

The study, particularly the preparation of potato (Solanum Toberosum) peels as an alternative

chicken feed was conducted in Lower Cabatangan, Zamboanga City, The potato (Solanum

Toberosum) was collected at Sta. Maria Wet Market and the chicken (Gallus Gallus Domesticus)

were collected in Zamora Kilometer 4.

Research Design

The research design used for this study is before and after without a control variable. There were

two (2) treatments and three (3) replicates, the statical tool used in this study was a t-test. The

independent variable in this study is the potato (Solanum Toberosum) and the dependent variable

is the growth (weight) of the chicken (Gallus Gallus Domesticus). There were 4 types of tests

made, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th week, for the first week the researchers will use 20 grams (g) of

potato peels (T1)/ commercial chicken feeds (T2) and 50 milliliters (ml) of water, for the second
week the researchers will use 50 grams (g) of potato peels (T1)/commercial chicken feeds (T2)

and 100 milliliters (ml) of water, for the third week the researcher will use 80 grams of potato

peels (T1)/ commercial chicken feeds (T2) and 150 milliliters (ml) of water, and the fourth week

the researcher will use 110 grams of potato peels (T1)/ commercial chicken feeds (T2) and 150

milliliters (ml) of water.

Materials and Apparatuses

The materials the researcher will use in conducting this experiment were: 1 small and big

weighing scale, 6 plastic cups (as drinking containers), 6 chicken pots (feeding pots), a knife, a

chopping board, Potatoes (Solanum Toberosum), commercial chicken feeds, a chicken cage with

6 cubicles and labels.

Procedure

Preparation of materials and alternative chicken feed

The researchers will gather the materials such as 1 small and big weighing scale, 6 plastic cups

(as drinking containers), 6 chicken pots (feeding pots), a knife, a chopping board, Potatoes

(Solanum Toberosum), commercial chicken feeds, a chicken cage with 6 cubicles and labels, but

before that, first is to make a cage for the chicks and the cage has to be separated by treatments
and samples. Then, the chicken pots and plastic cups were placed inside each of the cubicles of

the cage. These will serve as their feed and water containers.

Weighing the chicks, day 1

Before the chicks were placed in their cage, their weights were determined first and the data

were recorded on Day 1.

Preparation of food for chicks

Next, the preparation of the alternative feeds was done by boiling the potatoes, cutting them into

smaller pieces then weighing about 20 grams each for the second treatment of three samples. The

same goes for the other treatment of three samples also for the chicken to be fed with

commercial chicken feeds, then 50mL (milliliters) of water was placed in each of the plastic cups

for all six samples from the two treatments.

After day 1

The following day, the weight of the chicks was determined and recorded in the record book as

Day 2.
4-week changes

"Preparation of food for chicken" was done repeatedly daily for 30 days with an additional 30

grams on the given feeds every week and an additional 50 mL for their drinking water weekly,

too. And these are the 4-week changes: T1 (commercial feeds): first week 20 grams of feeds and

50 milliliters of water, second week 50 grams of feeds and 100 milliliters of water third week 80

grams of feeds and 150 milliliters of water, and fourth week 110 grams of feeds and 150-

milliliter water/T2 (alternative feeds): first week 20 grams of potato peels and 50 milliliters of

water, second week 50 grams of potato peels and 100 milliliters of water third week 80 grams of

potato peels and 150 milliliters of water, and fourth week 110 grams of potato peels and 150-

milliliter water.
