the five common text
types (narrative,
descriptive,
expository,
procedural,
argumentative) with
examples of each.
b) classify sample

respective text types;
and
c) appreciate the
importance of
understanding

letters presented on the
board (or from the
movable letters given to
you).
Rearrange the letters to
form a meaningful word.
Work carefully, each
scrambled set of letters
forms only one correct
word.
Example:
Scrambled: TAC →

Analysis
Directions: After forming
the words from the
scrambled letters, look
closely at the words you
made and think about
them. Answer the guide
questions in your own
words and
understanding.
1) What words were
formed?
2) Do these words
remind you of anything
you have read or written
before?
3) What do you think
these words have in
common with each
other?
Text Type
Depending upon their
purpose, different texts
have specific styles
and structures. The
categories of styles and
structures are called
text types. Depending
on what your purpose
is, you need to be able
to select an appropriate
text type and follow its
genre conventions.
Texts types, also
known as genres or
text forms, refer to
categories of texts with
different purposes.
Depending on the
purpose, each type of
text will have have a
different convention of
style and structure.
1. Narrative text tells a
story, and can be
either fiction or
nonfiction. Narrative
texts typically have a
beginning, middle, and
end, and they use
characters, setting,
and plot to create the
story.
Examples: Picture
books, Chapter books,
Short stories, Plays,
Biography, and Memoir.
2. Descriptive text
creates a picture with
words, using vivid
language to describe
people, places, things,
or events. Descriptive
text can be found in a
variety of genres,
including essays and
poetry.
Examples: Essays and
Poetry
3. Expository text
explains or informs, by
presenting facts,
definitions, or
processes in a clear
and concise way.
Expository text can be
found in a variety of
genres, including
textbooks, news
articles, and
informational books for
children — for
example, visual
encyclopedias and
pictorial information
books such as the DK
and National
Geographic series.
Examples: Textbooks,
News Articles, and
Pictorial informational
book.
4. Procedural or
instructional text
explains how to do
something through
step-by- step
explanations, often
accompanied by
numbered diagrams,
illustrations, or
photographs. Recipes
and how-to-build
Playmobil and Lego
kits are common
examples.
Examples: Recipes,
User Manuals, Building
kit instructions, and DIY
guides.
5. Argumentative or
persuasive text tries
to persuade the reader
to agree with a
particular point of view,
by using evidence,
logic, and reasoning to
support the claims.
Argumentative text
can be found in
essays, editorials, and
speeches.
Examples: Essays,
Editorials, and
Speeches.
Conclusion
Understanding text
types is essential for
effective reading and
writing. Each type—
narrative, descriptive,
expository, procedural,
and argumentative—
serves a distinct
purpose and follows
unique stylistic and
structural conventions.
Recognizing these
differences helps
readers better
comprehend information
and enables writers to
communicate more
clearly and persuasively.
Whether the goal is to
tell a story, paint a vivid
picture, explain a
concept, provide
instructions, or
persuade an audience,
selecting the
appropriate text type
ensures that the
message is conveyed
accurately and
effectively.
