1. What Is a Computer?

A computer is an electronic machine that:

 Takes input (data)


 Processes it
 Gives output (information)

Example:
You type numbers → Computer calculates → Shows result.

2. Basic Parts of a Computer


A. Hardware (Physical parts you can touch)

 Monitor – Screen that shows information


 CPU (Central Processing Unit) – The “brain” of the computer
 Keyboard – Used to type
 Mouse – Used to click and move
 Printer – Prints documents on paper
 Speakers – Play sound

B. Software (Programs inside the computer)

 Operating System (OS) – Runs the computer


o Examples: Windows, macOS, Linux
 Applications – Programs you use
o Examples: MS Word, Chrome, Paint

3. Turning the Computer On & Off


 Power Button – Turns computer ON
 Shut Down – Proper way to turn it OFF
o Start Menu → Shut Down

⚠️ Never turn off by unplugging directly.

4. Keyboard Basics
 Letters (A–Z) – Typing text
 Numbers (0–9) – Typing numbers
 Enter – New line / Confirm
 Spacebar – Space between words
 Backspace – Delete
 Shift – Capital letters

5. Mouse Basics
 Left Click – Select/open
 Right Click – Options menu
 Double Click – Open files
 Scroll Wheel – Move page up/down

6. Desktop & Icons


 Desktop – First screen after starting computer
 Icons – Small pictures representing files or apps
 Taskbar – Bar at bottom (shows open programs)

 File – A document (photo, video, text)
 Folder – Holds files together
