Good morning i'm going to demonstrate to you how to do the proper sponge bath for
an infant. You have to gather all the materials. We have (2) pails, one is empty, one is with a
dipper and warm water. We have the (3) basins: one is clear, one is soapy, and one for rinsing.
Also plastic for disposing of diapers. Then, we have shampoo, and four washcloths for pat
drying. We also need (2) basins: one is empty and one with the cotton balls as well as (3) towels
one is for the receiving, another one is for dressing, and one is a hoodie towel. Next, we have
the cotton buds, the petroleum jelly, alcohol, baby oil, the brush, thermometer, diaper, and the
baby layers (shorts, pajama, the vest, the cup, the booty, and the mittens). We’ll also need a
hamper, the trash bin, and an apron.
If all the materials are ready, we can now start with the procedure. For the procedure, turn off
the aircon and electric fan, close the windows, and doors one hour before the procedure. Then,
do the proper hand washing, wear the apron and check the temperature of your water before
doing the spongebath. Check the water with your wrist, hands, and elbow. Then you proceed to
the baby and check his/her temperature. Next, carry the baby, proceed to the receiving towel.
Swaddle the baby, start cleaning the eyes. For the eyes start cleaning the inner and outer
cantus far side. Using a clear water soak and squeeze a cotton ball and start cleaning the
inner cantus and then outer cantus far side…discard. Soak another cotton ball in the clear water
and clean the inner cantus and the outer cantus near side…discard, then pat dry.
For the forehead, get another cotton ball, start cleaning the forehead in a circular motion going
to the cheek, chin, then exit to the neck…discard. Get another cotton ball soak in the water,
then start cleaning the nose, the nose bridge, and then discard. Then, the ears, the outer lobe,

and bring the baby to shampooing. Lift the baby and flip the ear of the baby to avoid water from
getting in. Then, wet the baby's hair. Get a sufficient amount of shampoo then lather gently with
your finger pads, then rinse and pat dry.
Hamper the washcloth and then bring the baby back to the table and unswaddle the baby,
remove the baby's vests which includes shirt and short…hamper. Swaddle the baby. Expose
the upper extremities far side and start cleaning the baby's upper extremities using your soapy

Now, proceed to the near side, cover the far side, then do the same procedure.

the soapy water start cleaning. Get a cotton ball, start cleaning the chest in a circular motion,
then the abdomen and then exit to the navel… then discard. Rinse with the clear water using
cotton balls from the chest in a circular motion, then the abdomen, then exit through the navel…

the diaper, clean the buttocks. If there is none, throw the diaper in the trash bin.
Again swaddle the baby and bring the baby into side lying position. Support the baby's neck
and the head. Do the proper body mechanics to clean the baby's back. Expose the back of the

Now we’ll clean the baby's genital part. For the genital area, if the baby is a boy you are going to

Swaddle the baby. Check for the diaper rash of the baby. If there's diaper rash put some
petroleum jelly to prevent further diaper rashes, even to the buttocks and in the groin. Now put
on the diaper.
If the baby is a boy start from the top to the bottom, but if the baby is the girl start from the
bottom to the top. Here, the baby is a boy, so you start from the top at the bottom. Slide the
diaper then secure the diaper adhesive tape. Fold the ends of the diaper to prevent the navel
from irritation. Disinfect your hands with the alcohol. Get a cotton ball, put some alcohol on it
and drop at least two to three drops on the periphery of the navel… then discard. Let the navel
or the alcohol dries up… ventilate. Now, wear the baby's vest. Tie the vest from in to out. Next,
wear the baby's shorts. Tidy up the vest. Put the baby’s pajamas too as well as the mittens and
booty. Clean the baby's outer ear using the cotton buds. The outer ear, flip, and then the near
side of your ear…discard. Then use some baby oil to soften the cradle cup. Comb the baby's
hair. Wear the cap. Then transfer the baby to the hoodie blanket. Hamper your receiving or
dressing towel. Recheck the baby's body temperature. Swaddle the baby. Tidy up the
swaddling blanket and bring the baby back to the crib. Be sure that the baby is comfortable.
Secure the crib. Lastly, I'm going to return all the materials, remove my apron, do the proper
hand washing and also document and endorse it.
