Identify your chosen scenario.

Scenario 3: Workplace

Part One: Social Justice

(Complete this section in Module Two.)

1. Explain the difference between justice, fairness, and equality as they apply in your chosen
scenario.

Across the board fairness is rather blunt, treat all individuals such that no favoritism, bias,
etc. could be deemed present by a reasonable prudent person. Equality in the workplace, when
you give all employees the same resources or allowing anyone of Rank A to achieve Rank B if
their work history proves capable.

2. Describe how bias could impact social justice in your chosen scenario.
Bias whether explicit (purposeful) or implicit (subconscious) inevitably leads to a weaker
social justice system in the workplace. I want to focus on the culture. Such as the tone at the top.
A biased workplace could potentially lead to an environment where specific groups of people feel
hopeless and unsupported. When personnel feel like they’re unappreciated or have no chance of
success you’ll often notice higher turnover from the low morale and lack of accomplishment or
appreciation. Other important considerations are whether we’re hiring based on skin tone due to
quota, do we promote women as often as men or men as often as women. Is pay equal based on
merit?

3. Explain how different narratives circulating in society could impact how social justice is
perceived in your chosen scenario. These narratives may be on social media, in the news, or
among community members.
This is an easy one. There is currently a war on DEI start was spearheaded by the federal
government. Those who can’t telework create barriers for the employees who can and
unfortunately if you’re in management the agency doesn’t allow telework. Therefore the higher
ups in the government have stated if we have to be here so do you. My agency lost a lot of
wisdom that will cripple the mission areas they were working in once they realize how necessary
it was to retain a skilled employee. Once the federal government made the decision many other
corporations followed. Changing lives and family structures just because an old school team took
office and do not recognize a work-life balance.

4. Explain the core principles of social justice in your chosen scenario.

The core principles of social justice in the workplace are designed to cultivate an
equitable and inclusive environment where every employee has the opportunity to succeed. By
prioritizing equity, diversity, inclusion, participation, and fair treatment, organizations can
develop a culture that aligns with social justice values while also boosting employee satisfaction,
engagement, and productivity. Adopting these principles is crucial for creating a fair and just
workforce that embodies the ideals of equality for all.

Part Two: Elevating Your Cultural Fluency

(Complete this section in Module Three.)
1. Describe how cultural fluency benefits your self-awareness.
Cultural fluency is the ability to communicate and interact effectively with people from a
variety of cultural backgrounds. It allows you to increase your cultural awareness and become
more familiar with actions and behaviors that might offend others or likewise when different
behaviors may offend you. By understanding others you can adapt your actions and behaviors
and open a variety of avenues for growth.

2. Describe how to demonstrate cultural fluency in your chosen scenario.

In the workplace I often practice active listening. This means to maintain eye contact,
don’t browse the room. Ask questions when the person I’m speaking to pauses to show fully
engaged as well as asking questions that indicate I’d like a response so that the person I’m
talking to can share their perspective(s). Being mindful of a peer that may be soft spoken while
I’m having a stressful day. I always take a break before I entering a meeting with my Nepali
peers because I know they tend to stay reserved and maintaining their composure while I’m
often loud and frustrated. I typically get a better response and more information this way.

Part Three: Intercultural Communication and Collaboration

(Complete this section in Module Four.)

1. Explain how mindfulness of different cultures could improve communication with individuals in
your chosen scenario.
Mindfulness of different cultures is critical for communication in a diverse workplace. It
allows individuals to change their communication styles to be understood more clearly with
peers from different backgrounds. Understanding unique communication styles like direct
versus indirect, helps reduce misunderstandings and leads to growth when practicing active
listening. Cultural awareness builds trust and respect, creating a positive atmosphere that
encourages collaboration. To enhance cultural mindfulness, individuals can engage in training,
seek clarification, and reflect on your/their own biases. In the end, being culturally mindful not
only improves relationships but also increases productivity.

2. Describe how familiarity with diverse backgrounds can positively influence communication in
your chosen scenario.
Familiarity with diverse backgrounds positively influences workplace communication by
fostering an understanding and sympathy among employees. This reduces misunderstandings
and creates a supportive environment. It gives people a chance to alter their communication
styles to suit different people and promotes inclusivity by making your peers feel appreciated.
Additionally, it improves team dynamics by building stronger relationships and enhancing
cooperation.

3. Explain why an awareness of diversity is beneficial to collaboration in your chosen scenario.

Awareness of diversity in the workplace encourages collaboration and innovation. It
improves problem-solving by allowing members to approach challenges from different angles
which is a byproduct of inclusivity and diversity. Also this awareness fortifies team dynamics by
promoting inclusion and respect, reducing biases, and enhancing communication skills. A
commitment to diversity leads to higher employee engagement and satisfaction, in turn you’ll
have a very efficient environment.
