CHAPTER 1

Introduction of the Workshop

1.1 About the Industry

Fig 1.1 Company Logo

We take this opportunity to introduce " S.P Engineers LTD. " as a growth oriented and
quality conscious engineering firm. The company manufactures and does maintenance of
machine parts and exports to the suppliers and machine owners.

1.1.1 Establishment and Purpose

 The S.P ENGINEERS work was established as a part of company and workshop,
expansion strategy to meet the high manufacturing workshop as per customer demand.

 It was started in 2012 and quickly evolved into the manufacturing workshop successfully,
it manufactures and do maintenance of machine and machine parts.

UNNIVERSITY COLLEGE, DAMAN
TEAM ID:883301 INTRODUCTION OF
THE WORKSHOP
 The main goal of a CNC machine was to automate the manufacturing process for creating
complex and high-tolerance parts. Industries like aerospace, automotive, medical device
manufacturing, and electronics relied on them for mass production, prototyping, and
making parts with intricate geometries that would be difficult or impossible to produce
manually.

1.1.2 Infrastructure & Technology

 Infrastructure

The infrastructure of such a plant is centered around these key machines.

 CNC Machines: As the backbone of the plant, these are the Computer Numerical
Control machines. They operate based on pre-programmed computer instructions (G-
code and M-code) to control the movement of tools and produce parts with exceptional
accuracy and repeatability. A plant equipped with these machines can run "lights-out,"
meaning they can operate 24/7 with minimal human supervision once a program is
loaded. This drastically increases productivity.
 VMC (Vertical Machining Centre): A VMC is a specific type of CNC machine where
the cutting tool is mounted on a vertical spindle. This configuration is ideal for machining
flat parts, Molds, and dies. Their infrastructure includes an automated tool changer (ATC)
that swaps tools to perform various operations like milling, drilling, and tapping without
manual intervention.
 Lathe Machines: Lathes are used for turning operations, where the workpiece rotates
while a cutting tool shapes it. They are essential for creating cylindrical parts like shafts,
bolts, and bushings. This includes both manual lathes for simple, quick jobs and CNC
lathes for high-volume, precise production.
 Milling Machines: A milling machine removes material from a stationary workpiece
using a rotating cutting tool. Unlike a lathe, it's used for creating flat or irregular surfaces,
slots, and contours. A plant might have both manual milling machines for prototyping
and custom work and CNC milling machines for higher precision and automated
production.

THE WORKSHOP

FIG 2. Workshop Infrastructure

 Technology

The technology in a plant with this equipment is heavily focused on automation and
precision.

 Computer-Aided Design (CAD): This software is used to design the 3D models of the
parts to be manufactured.
 Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM): CAM software translates the CAD models
into the machine's specific language (G-code), creating the tool paths and instructions for
the CNC and VMC machines.
 Integrated Systems: The most advanced plants connect their machines to a central
network, allowing for real-time monitoring, data sharing, and predictive maintenance. This
integration, often part of a Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS), allows the plant to
quickly adapt to changing production needs.
 Advanced Tooling: High-speed spindles, quick-change tool holders, and tools made from
advanced materials like polycrystalline diamond (PCD) and cubic boron nitride (CBN)
enable faster material removal and longer tool life, further boosting efficiency.

Works Carried Out by S.P Engineers

3.1 Overview of Industry Works:

S.P Engineers Ltd, Vapi, is a manufacturer of machine parts and maintenance of machine.
CNC machines use computer control for precise turning, drilling, and milling. VMC
(Vertical Machining Centre) is a CNC type with a vertical spindle, ideal for accurate 3D
cutting, Molds, and dies. Milling workshops perform material removal using cutters for
shaping, slotting, and gear cutting. Together, they provide automation, high accuracy, and

more time consumption. CNC and VMC overcome these limitations by automating the
entire machining process with the help of programmed instructions, ensuring high
precision, repeatability, and efficiency. Manufacturing machine parts are ,(Paper mill
shafts, Gears, Die moulds)

The process begins with the design of a component using CAD (Computer-Aided Design)
software. The CAD model is then processed in CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing)
software, which generates the required tool paths and codes (G-codes and M-codes).
These codes are transferred to the CNC or VMC machine, where the program controls the
cutting tools and workpiece movements automatically.

. They are flexible and can manufacture both simple and complex parts with equal
precision It is especially suitable for milling operations, 3D contouring, drilling, tapping,
and making Molds or dies. With the help of automatic tool changers and rigid fixtures,
VMCs reduce setup time and allow multiple operations to be performed in a single
setting.

CNC is a modern machining system in which the movement of machine tools is controlled
by a computer program instead of manual operation. It converts a CAD (Computer-Aided
Design) drawing into CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) tool paths, which are then
translated into G-codes and M-codes. These codes guide the machine to control the
position, feed, depth of cut, speed, and tool changes automatically.

In a CNC machine, the operator sets up the workpiece and cutting tools, while the
computer executes the machining sequence with high accuracy and repeatability. CNC
machines are capable of performing operations like turning, drilling, milling, boring,
grinding, and threading. They are especially useful for producing complex shapes and
precision components that would be difficult or impossible with conventional machines.
