JET STREAM – SIMPLE NOTES
1. Jet Stream:
Jet stream is a narrow band of very fast-moving air in the upper troposphere.
It flows from west to east around the Earth.
It strongly influences global weather.
2. Formation of Jet Stream:
Jet stream forms due to temperature difference between polar cold air and tropical warm air.
Pressure difference and Coriolis effect make the wind move fast and curve.
3. Characteristics:
• Very fast winds
• Narrow air current
• Flows west to east
• Unaffected by surface friction
4. Types of Jet Stream:
(A) Polar Jet Stream:
• Strongest jet stream
• Located at 9–12 km height
• Stronger in winter
• Controls mid-latitude weather
(B) Subtropical Jet Stream:
• Located at 10–16 km height
• Found near 30° latitude
• Influences tropical weather
5. Impact on Weather:
• Controls movement of storms
• Causes heat waves and cold waves
• Responsible for floods and droughts
6. Seasonal Shift:
• Moves north in summer
• Moves south in winter
• Affects rainfall and temperature
7. El Niño and La Niña:
• El Niño weakens jet stream
• La Niña strengthens jet stream
8. Discovery:
• Discovered during World War II by aircraft pilots
9. Index Cycle of Jet Stream:
Stage 1: Straight flow
Stage 2: Wavy flow
Stage 3: Strong meandering
Stage 4: Cut-off stage
10. Significance:
• Helps weather forecasting
• Important for aviation
